Castle Apartment, Krakow Old Town

ul. Bernardyńska, Royal Wawel Castle, Krakow Old Town, Poland

about the property

The best location in Krakow Old Town – immediately by the Wawel Royal Castle – any closer and you’d be on State land! Fabulous holiday rental apartment previously owned by the City Architect, this is really a special place to stay in Cracow.

As central as you can get in one of the world's finest cities - Krakow! The owner bought this flat as it was a very rare opportunity to buy any residential property this close to the Royal Wawel Castle complex - most of this street is public and State buildings, or owned by the Church (the State still own the land the apartment sits on). You have free access to the castle grounds in the daytime.

The nineteenth century apartment was given to one of the city architects in the 1950s (I assume as a reflection of his status as it is one of the best addresses in Poland), and he redeveloped it in a mid-century style with teak fitted cupboards, a parquet floor and adding a balcony. We've completely renovated it in 2015, adding a new central heating system, restoring the woodwork, and adding a new kitchen and bathroom.

The artwork is by up-and-coming Polish artist Arek Twardowski, and we've added reproduction 1950s and 1960s wallpapers that reprint original Polish communist era designs. It enjoys good views over quit Church gardens. You won't find a better location for a Krakow visit, but you might want to extend your stay down in the mountains in our log house (90 minute drive).

As always with UTT the apartment lived-up to its description. Small but stylish, it accommodated 5 adults. Perfectly situated. the approach through the apartment building, we suspect, has changed little since the Soviet days, and gives an atmospheric frisson to the first arrival. All reservations are dispelled, however, once inside the apartment itself. One small matter concerned the lack of any spare keys - as promised in the arrival instructions - but a spare set was easily and cheaply procured, and left behind for the use of subsequent guests.

We 3 ladies traveled from the US to visit Krakow. We found the apartment to be perfect for our needs. It was clan and nicely decorated. Very quiet at night, or at any time even with the windows open! So peaceful and yet so central! Karoline, Ruth, Janine

We enjoyed our stay at the apartment. Its location was perfect and quite dreamy for the kids as they were so close to the castle and to the mythical Dragon's lair! Thank you for sharing your lovely home. Josie & family (Detroit).

Apartment ideally located right beneath the Wawel Castle with nice balcony views over gardens. Interior stylishly decorated with all amenities. UTT's done a great job renovating the apartment whilst keeping a 'vintage' touch. Very quiet as rear-facing. Second floor without elevator. Parking in the street is easy and inexpensive. An ideal base to discover Krakow and feel the town's atmosphere. - Heike

The apartment looks fantastic. Very nicely furnished, clean, with all the amenities one might need. Lots of natural light, incredible neighbourhood (the castle is literally across the road) and nice view from the bedroom window. Everything looks just like it does in the pictures. Also loved the art on the walls. The check in/check out process worked very smoothly. All the important stuff is in a short walking distance. It was great! - Irina from Germany

This is the perfect location next to Wawel and the river and close to the town square Rynek and the Jewish district Kazimierz. We enjoyed our stay so much that we were depressed for a full day after arriving in Warsaw. The heat was high 90's but the apartment stayed cool and a fan was provided. The unique shower and balcony were nice touches and the beds are comfortable. Ironing board and hair dryer are also provided. ” Magdalena, Michigan, United States

“Absolutely lovely apartment and very efficient key system. It is right in the old part of Krakow opposite of the castle but also very quiet. Very nicely decorated apartment and we felt very comfortable. Would highly recommend this place although we forgot it was without an elevator. If people have problems with carrying luggage; good thing to know that it some stairs up ” Saskia from Brussels, Belgium

"“We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment in Cracow a lot! Exactly as in the images, 2 lovely sleeping rooms with a view over gardens, a living room with a great balcony - very nicely decorated, really all you need! We were 3 girls and had plenty of space. The location is opposite of the Wawel castle - so really within a minute you are at the Vistula river - or in Kazimierz - lots of shops and bars around and also the old city... Moreover, as hot as it is at the moment, the old building provided a great cool climate without aircondition. In the booking process the owner always answered any kind of questions almost immediately or within a few hours - and all the process was quite easy and well explained - how to arrive, what to know etc.... I would definitely return! Thanks!” Lisa Wiesenthal from Vienna

"We had a great time at this apartment. It is very well located near the wonderful Wawel Hill and only ten minute walk to the main square. The apartment was very bright and comfortable and had a lovely modern bathroom and kitchen. It was wonderful to feel part of a regular polish community. Owner was extremely helpful and very contactable. Only issue was that the curtains were very light and we woke every morning at 7 am!! Highly recommended” Denise from Sligo

"The apartment is very comfortable, the linens and bedding along with the kitchen were professionally cleaned and we were very pleased with the apartment itself. Also the location was ideal, close to the old town and restaurants. The communication with owner was very good along with the instructions for getting the key. Downside, to get the apartment you have to go up three short flights of stairs. This wasn't a problem for us but may be if you have mobility issues. " Scott McClure from Toronto

"Great place to stay in every respect! Both the old town, as well as the entertainment district of Kazimierz can be reached within walking distance. The apartment is quiet and has a nice view. Stylishly furnished and very bright. The equipment has everything you need for a long weekend. The communication with owner was super easy and fast. The arrival and departure is properly organised. Highly recommended! " Rainer from Switzerland

"We had an amazing 4 days in Krakow. The flat is decorated and furnished to a very high standard, which meant we really enjoyed our time in the flat between one excursion and the other. The location is absolutely perfect as it's just across the road from the Wawel castle and a short walk to the main Square and the Old Jewish town. As the flat is facing the internal courtyard, that meant it was really quiet, even with the windows open. If we were to go back to Krakow (which we'd love to) we would definitely stay here again." Martina, Rome.

"My friend and I really enjoyed our stay in this flat and we recommend it to others. The location makes it the perfect base from which to explore Krakow, it is very central and yet very quiet too. The flat is nicely decorated and comfortable and the arrival instructions helped to make everything straightforward. Furthermore, the kitchen is well-equipped and the place was clean. It is probably worth noting that you do need to climb a couple of flights of stairs to the flat which is in an old building, so this would not suit anyone with mobility issues. A great holiday in a lovely flat in a fabulous location. Krakow is amazing – book your stay now!" Anna Barras

"We had a great stay in Greg's apartment! The apartment is clean, well equipped and in an amazing location. I honestly don't think you could be in a better place as it is so close to both the old town and the Jewish Quarter. There are great resturants, cafés and bars all within a short walking distance and the kitchen has all utensils so we enjoyed cooking breakfasts and brunch to enjoy in the apartment. We loved our trip to Krakow and it was great to have such a lovely apartment as our base. Clean, quiet and a great location. Thanks for a great stay! " Emma UK
