Little Red Gypsy Caravan

upper Wye Valley/ Welsh Lake District, Mid Wales

about the property

A sweet traditional gypsy caravan for holidays in mid-Wales, the perfect base for exploring the famous Elan valley area near Rhayader. You have completely private facilities and great views over the countryside in this traditional romany caravan holiday home.

See extra photos of this beautiful gypsy caravan. This traditional bow-top gypsy waggon with its delightful, detailed paintings is a truly romantic and wonderful place to stay, and you have access to an amazing treehouse where you can feed wild badgers! Privately located with your own kitchen and bathroom in the accompanying shepherd's hut, this is the ultimate romantic gypsy caravan holiday.

The organic farm where the caravan is situated lies at about 900 feet in the upper Wye Valley, a great place for families - with a wealth of activities on the door step. This unspoilt area is little touched by tourism, you have 200 acres of 'your' land to explore and direct access to miles of open mountain trails.

Great for fly-fishing on the Wye - you have access to brown trout and (sometimes) salmon over a 1.5 mile stretch of the river. Right in the heart of Wales in ‘kite country’, surrounded by the hills, mountains and moors of Plynlimon (Pumlumon) and the Cambrian mountains.

The accommodation is great, but what makes this place a winner is the genuine sense of being close to nature and wildlife that you get from staying here. You have immediate access onto beautiful open mountain moorland which is intersected by great walking and cycle routes. You can also walk further down again to the river which has a boardwalk along it - you have access to 1.5 miles of private river frontage.

Winter location (October to May) - in a private courtyard of traditional stone farm buildings with open views, private facilities and 'undercover' space and 'chiminea' to keep you snug in all weather

Summer location (May to October) - in a private open meadow with chiminea - you get the caravan and shepherd's hut (bathroom/kitchen).

Note - you always have your own private facilities - you never have to share any bathroom or kitchen and you always have your own private space.

in detail

The accommodation includes the caravan and a shepherds' hut which houses the kitchen, dining area and shower room.

The duo is fully mobile and will be moved to different locations according to the seasons. Between about May and October the caravan and shepherd's hut will be moved to a secluded corner of a sloping meadow, just a short walk from the river Wye and surrounded by wildflower hay meadows and wetlands (see pic labelled 'view'). During the rest of the year the duo will be brought up to its own private and sheltered garden courtyard, next to attractive old stone barns and the facilities of the farm.

Gypsy Waggon:

  • A fitted daybed, piled high with cushions and cosy rugs, slides out to make a comfortable 5'ft 3" x 6'6" double bed, with all linen and bedding provided
  • Lots of storage in beautifully painted cupboards and drawers
  • Padded seating in the sitting room area.

Shepherds Hut:

  • The pretty fitted kitchen with locally sourced ash work surfaces has a combination microwave, 2 ring ceramic hob, fridge and sink.
  • Comfortable indoor dining and sitting area with a table and 2 chairs
  • Shower room with wash basin, flush loo, heated towel-rail and lighted mirror. The underfloor heating makes this bathroom really cosy- visitors say, luxurious!
  • Double French doors leading outside onto deck and sitting area, with outdoor furniture and chiminea.

Outside:Changes with the seasons!

  • Sitting area in your own sheltered courtyard garden for alfresco dining on warm evenings, or from May, in secluded camp alongside old traditional hedges with views of the hills on all sides.
  • Chiminea for fires or barbecues.
  • You'll find a games room in the old farmyard, where you can play table-tennis, table-football and pool.
  • There is also a laundry room with washing machine and freezer for use of the guests..
  • Radio provided, but no TV (you're welcome to bring DVDs and a laptop)
  • You can borrow bikes and there are some great trails, and footpaths and longdistance bridleways that start at the door.

this is the place to go for getting away from the everyday grind of work etc. Stunning simplicity, watching the sun set behind the mountain over a glass of wine, amazing walks along the river (and fishing), superb hosts.

Well the photos don't really do justice to just how lovely it is. The shepherds hut and the caravan are nestled into the corner of an organic hay field The gypsy caravan is housed under a Dutch barn protecting the canvas roof and giving us another area under cover and we needed it as it lashed down and the wind howled for two days!! It made no difference we were still snuggled and warm and we had three places to go. Either sitting playing cards in the gypsy caravan at night with the little fire on or eating in the shepherds hut looking out through the French door's or just relaxing under the Dutch barn listening to the birds all along the hedgerow. The one evening in a break from the rain we lit the chiminera and listened to the owls hooting in the trees. The badger watching was extraordinary in the most enviable treehouse I've ever seen we went down during the day to check it out it's just the most amazing feat built properly to live alongside the trees and the very large badger set underneath. We saw three badgers in all, just wonderful. The owners are lovely people who have a gorgeous farmhouse (Welsh organic lamb) with further lovely accommodation in the farm out buildings where there is also a barn you can play ping-pong or pool in, or just simply sit and watch the amazing variety of birds that come to their cookie bird table. I will definitely come back and I might even book a weekend there on my own just to be quiet and listen.

The Gypsy Caravan what just what we expected it to be. Well maintained and rustic with just the bare minimum of modern equipment in the form of heating and lighting. The bedding was clean with more than enough extra blankets if required. The adjoining kitchenette with toilet and shower facilities were modern, also of a similar high standard of cleanliness. They were well stocked with all the equipment required to ensure our stay was enjoyable. The owner was very helpful with local knowledge which was a great help to us. This type of accommodation is ideal if you wish to get away from the world and just enjoy country life. Just what we look for in our breaks from the humdrum of working. We would recommend this Gipsy Caravan to couples who like to be left alone to enjoy each others' company in peaceful surroundings.

'We had a fantastic time staying at the Farm. The quaint Romany caravan was a joy to stay in. Comfortable and warm, it was a special place that reminded us of a simpler life away from modern distractions. It was a truly unique experience and I hope that we’ll be able to return very soon.'
