about the property

The Best Place to Stay in Poland says the Guardian. Traditional Polish log cabin holiday home with fabulous interior near to the best value low-cost skiing in Europe. Amazing value and full of charm.

The perfect mountain home for summer or winter - a traditional log house for up to 7 near Poland's best skiing and hiking routes. Zawoja is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in the Beskidy mountains south of Krakow, picturesquely situated at the foot of the 'Babia Gora' mountain.

Guardian Newspaper UK chose this property in their 'Top 40 Places to Stay in Europe' with the following review,

"If you prefer hiking to sunbathing, this country cabin has good access to lovely hillside paths, or if you're after more speed, mountain biking trails and Poland's longest zipwire. Inside, it mixes folkart with local antiques."

We've restored earth-built houses, thatched cottages, many stone and even tin cottages...but had always dreamed of restoring a traditional log 'cabin' farmhouse in the mountains. We found the perfect house for this in the unspoilt mountains of Southern Poland and bought the house with a hectare of land around it.

Sucha Gora sits in a small hamlet (shop open 7 days) up on Sucha Gora ('Dry Mountain') on the edge of the famous Babia Gora National Park (there aren't houses actually IN the park) at Zawoja. Just 15 minutes to the longest ski-run in Poland that becomes one of the country's finest downhill mountain bike trails in summer, or 20 minutes to Poland's longest and most exciting zip-wire adventure forest park. The main village (10 mins) of Zawoja has long been a poplar tourist destination and has a mountain centre, ice rink, summer bathing beach (on the river), restaurants specialising in mountain food, and one of many local wooden Churches for which the area is famous.

A fast-flowing mountain stream runs through your land and you can fall asleep to its sound. The area is home to amazing wildlife (salamaders, fireflies, slow-worms, many deer, bears if you are lucky) and fine landscape views. You may not have heard of the area, but let us assure you it is easily accessible, beautiful, affordable, and a great location for a relaxing apline holiday - scroll down for our list of local acitivities. The surrounding area caters well for the tourist in summer (hiking, horse-riding, open-air museums, forest adventure park etc) and winter (very affordable skiing and snowboarding, ice rink, 'karczma' log restaurants open year round). All this just 90 minutes from Krakow (less from its airport); maybe you'd consider a two-centre holiday with our Old Town apartment there.

We've restored the house to meet modern expectations, with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, furnishing with a collection of antique mountain furniture 'repatriated' from antique shops across Europe, and a state-of-the-art German wood-fired stove central-heating system that easily keeps the house snug all year round. The master bedroom enjoys a kingsize bed made from the local silver birch trees and a huge bath large enough for two. The second bedroom also has a similar over-sized bath for two and bedroom three has a very large walk-in wet-room.

Skiing is remarkable affordable here and without the pretentiousness of many European resorts. A full day skilift pass is around £16 (£12 for half day or £8 for 2 hours - enough for most) and ski or sno-board hire prices are among the lowest prices in the EU (typically under £10). Instruction is also affordable and there are easy, learner slopes for children. The ice rink in the village costs around 80 pence for an hour or take a horse-drawn sleigh into the woods for a traditional fireside feast.  We learned to ski as adults here and nobody laughs when you fall over! One of the lifts has a webcam. In the summer the slope (Poland's longest) converts to an amazing downhill mountain bike trail, and there are outdoor hot-tubs, the chairlifts still work, and zorbing for the small ones.

customer reviews for Sucha Gora log cabin

Great cabin with lots of lovely unusual touches. Fabulous bath in the main room. Nice little balcony off the kitchen. The weather was very warm while we were there, but we still lit that wonderful fire. Consequently, the duvet seemed rather hefty for the temperatures we'd managed to achieve! Fantastic walk up towards Babia Gora, and a great massage and swim in Jawora spa. Moving on to the 50s appartment in Kraków. Many thanks for all your work Greg. Mary, Michael and Lily

A great week in a new part of Europe for our little family. Have really enjoyed exploring the area and the fact there are few other tourists. Great walking for every level. The woodland is beautiful and peaceful and Martha (8) enjoyed the line park nearby. The farmhouse is very special and we have enjoyed the peaceful setting. Lighting the fire on a wet day and sitting in the peaceful surroundings is enjoyable in itself. Another success with UTT! - Sam, Paddy, Martha

We enjoyed our short stay (too short!) in peaceful Skawica. We were extremely happy staying in the wooden cottage. It is truly special! Exactly as the pictures show, but even better with the smell of fire and antiques and the sound of the wooden floor creaking under your feet. Also best bath I've had in years! We'll be back. - Eva

We loved every minute of our stay at Sucha Lodge. The house is amazing and the area is beautiful. We enjoyed hiking and wished we could have stayed longer. We combined it with a stay in the artist's apartment in Krakow which was a great combination. The colours in the trees in the mountain were amazing. We hope to visit again and see more of the wooden churches in the area.

A wonderful week in this beautiful cabin in the woods. We were so snug with the fire going. Weather was good after a cold start and we had some excellent walks in the surrounding woods and countryside. We absolutely loved the house - a truly superb and sympathetic renovation with great attention to detail. Thank you! - M, M & Finn

We had an adventure-filled time here and loved every minute. The neighbours are the kindest people, and we couldn't have been cosier once we had the fire on. We enjoyed our downtime in the mountains reading and sitting by the fire. This place couldn't be more charming - thank you! Ann

Do go to the train museum - they let our ten year old up onto the hot plates, and even to scramble onto the roof of the carriages! Try the honey that is for sale from Pan Jawor who lives just three houses down the hill - he has 70 beehives and took the time to show us how he extracts the honey. His honey is also amazing value at 35PLN a litre! Ask him about trout too as he farms them in his ponds.' Gavin, Katherine, Oscar and Vita

“This place is just fantastic. The house is super-comfortable, very clean, beautifully decorated. The combination of rustic and modernity. All around is peace and quiet, the neighbours are very friendly. We were looking for such a place for years. It's also a good base for hiking. The owner is great, very nice and helpful, you can ask about everything and he quickly responds." Natalia Bokun, USA

“The cabin was very comfortable and had all amenities needed; we wish we had booked for a longer stay and would love to return. Our initial mis-adventures upon arrival at this delightful cabin could have led to a poor review but instead I have only positive comments for UTT and the neighbors! The previous guests had taken all the matches, and water pressure was low, but both were fixed by the friendly neighbour housekeeper straight away. We enjoyed the adventure and the friendliness of all involved. I would definitely recommend a visit.” Ann and daughter from Sacramento California

Wow, what an amazing cottage. We loved every square inch of it, so beautiful and the very best place I have ever stayed. My husband had purposefully not looked at any pictures before we arrived, so it would be a surprise. He nearly cried because it was so lovely. Had a bath every night in the huge bath in the master bedroom, looking at the beautiful silver birth beams of my bed. Totally recommend and we will be back. Thank you UTT

My stay at the cottage was perfect. It's fantastic place to get away from city noise, traffic and crowds. I spent there 2 days with my dog. She loved it too. We arrived late at rainy night but the instructions were so clear and precise that I had no problem to find it. Self check in is great option as nobody is waiting for you and you can arrive at any time. It was cold and rainy but lady who takes care about the house lighted up fire few hours before so it was very warm inside when we came in. Fireplace was working great during whole stay. I was delighted with all decor details, old furniture, and many objects which seemed to be taken from heritage park. I've kept discovering them every day. Kitchen is very well equipped and spacious. Bed was comfortable. I really enjoyed the hot bath as well. I will be definitely coming back to this cottage to better discover the local countryside. There are many nice walks to go and places to visit. You will find maps, guides and other interesting books in the living room.Believe me I wouldn't have arranged it any better. Fantastic cottage and fantastic host! Paulina from Krakow.

Having stayed at a beautiful UTT cottage in Wales last year, we had high hopes for the Sucha Gora cabin- and we were certainly not disappointed. It was the perfect getaway we were looking for to beat the January blues. The cabin combines a quirky mix - a beautiful traditional log cabin with modern comforts - lovely comfortable beds, huge baths and power shower and great cooking facilities. On arrival we had a warm and inviting welcome with a blazing fire which kept the cabin warm throughout our stay. With lovely forest walks with great views straight from the house, a small shop up the road, along with restaurants and ski runs a short drive away, there was everything we needed to feel like we had got away. There was also an amazing drive to Zakopane, plus with Krakow only am hour away, it had the best of both worlds. The only problem was we weren't there long enough! Can't wait for our next UTT experience!

'We LOVE the house, and the stylish mix of contemporary and traditional design...so comfortable. We have had a great week, very interesting and relaxing - mountain lakes and walks, horse-drawn carriage ride, the local Skansen, a daytrip into Slovakia, eating local cheeses. We particularly enjoyed the labelled 'blue' walk up from the house to the viewpoint on the ridge. a great week in Sucha Gora! Maggie & Will

"The cabin was absolutely perfect! We were two couples staying 4 nights in December and we celebrated new years eve there. We had a fantastic stay and we feel so lucky that we found this place. What really amazed us is that the owner Greg managed to renovate this old wooded cabin into a luxury home, without loosing its traditional look and feel. We spend a lot of time just walking around the cabin looking at all the wonderful details, such as the traditional wooden tools, old picture portraits, wooden carvings and so forth. On the luxury side it has 3 new bathrooms (2 bathtubs) and a modern fireplace that heats the whole house. The cabin is located in a calm little spot with very friendly and helpful neighbors. The village of Zawoja is a short drive (15 minutes by car) from the cabin and we went there to eat delicious food in one of the Karczmas (Inns). We went skiing three of the days in three different places with good skiing for both beginners and advanced. You can also easily take day-trips to Krakow and Zakopane in the Tatras. " Dennis from Denmark, stayed NYE

I've stayed in utts in Wales, Ireland, Barcelona, Andalucia, Krakow...and now here...but this is my favourite. Driving up the hill and spotting the house behind the old barn was a delight. You enter and it's a combination of traditional alpine character...but with amazing bathrooms etc. I love it!
