Somerset Oak Barn

about the property

Glastonbury holiday cottage for the family in this traditional oak barn, perfect for exploring the Somerset Levels and trips to Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral, Clark’s Village and Cheddar Gorge.

Not far from Glastonbury, lies Somerset Oak Barn, an English Heritage oak-framed cottage recently built on the site of the old linhay adjacent to (but facing away from) a traditional Somerset farmhouse which was Godney's village alehouse and dates back to the 17th century.

The Barn is centrally heated and cosy all year round; it is spacious, light and airy in summer and yet warm and snug in winter. It is decorated throughout in a mix of French and British antiques and contemporary classics and also houses various original artwork. Even a rowing boat for idle evenings on the adjacent water. Everybody who has stayed here has absolutely loved it - we've never had a single complaint! Check our facebook album out here for extra images - Also great for the Glastonbury festival - owner will even drop you off!!

customer reviews for Somerset Oak Barn

Thanks Kim for a lovely weekend at your barn. The welcome jam, eggs & croissants were a kind welcoming touch with a well equipped kitchen and great DVD library. We walked to the Sheppey pub and had good days out at Glastonbury and Wells. Highlight without a doubt though was Roger’s Cider...a place we’ll never forget...and may well be the reason we have to return!

This is an ideal property to explore many local attractions. The barn is welcoming and cosy, full of wonderful furniture and artwork. We arrived on a rainy Sunday afternoon and were greeted by the sight of a candle burning on the table. Kim obviously cares about her guests, leaving them a basket of provisions and placing fresh flowers around the barn. As we were only staying for a few days, we concentrated on visiting Glastonbury and Wells, two places with totally different atmospheres but each with its own history, market (check which day it's on) and eating places. Also, if you enjoy a wander around a reclamation yard, those as well! There are some lovely walks to take from the barn and for us, coming from the valleys of South Wales, the flatness of the Somerset Levels was quite a novelty! One walk took us to the local Sheppey Inn which is well worth a visit (or two.) This pub is unique in its style and has a welcoming staff, great music, fantastic food and is totally dog friendly. Actually, the dogs receive as warm a welcome as the human visitors do. The barn is the perfect place to relax, either inside on the squashy sofas or in the garden, listening to the chickens who, incidentally provided us with fresh eggs which were delicious scrambled on toast. We did look for a visitors' book to write in before we left as we find them useful and informative when staying in Under the Thatch properties. We would willingly come back here for another visit.

Delightful location in the Somerset countryside with lots of walks on your doorstep and easy access to Wells and Glastonbury. The barn is lovely and we'll equipped. A lovely welcome hamper with fresh eggs, bread and jam was well received after our 5 hrs on the road. We were lucky enough to stay over the bank holiday weekend and had the loveliest Sunday, which started with a dog walk through the neighbouring fields, followed by a short walk to the local pub The Sheppey. Wow we really enjoyed our sunny afternoon, fine food and friendly staff with the owner DJing some mellow choons made for a wonderful experience. Would heartily recommend the Somerset Oak Barn for its peaceful location, and lovely character and access to local amenities.

A warm welcome after a long drive: fresh flowers in every room and a filled basket with fresh bread. A candle burning especially for us! We enjoyed every minute of our stay! We would recommend this to everyone.

Lovely cottage, tastefully furnished and great decor. The Somerset levels are a unique area and wished we could have stayed longer. The Sheppey inn down the road is so quirky and so glad we visited - don't judge a book by its cover! you'll be pleasantly surprised. Thank you Kim for a wonderful stay.

What a lovely place, and what marvellous furniture! We had a very comfortable few days here, the fresh flowers everywhere made it special, as did the fresh eggs, and the homemade jam. Lucky enough to watch a woodpecker every morning, and lots of birds, and bats in the evening.

We have had a lovely stay in Somerset Oak Barn, which has a very welcoming atmosphere, warm, comfortable beds and flowers in the rooms. It is in such a good area - Glastonbury, the Tor, walks in buttercup filled meadows, rowing to the Sheppey Inn, which had good food and a great band playing when the evening we went, and there is a good selection of ciders and local beers. For those interested there is a good plant nursery on the way to Glastonbury. The Hundred Monkeys, in Glastonbury and recommended by Kim, is good for lunch. Another good property from Under the Thatch!

We had a great holiday staying in the oak barn - it's really cosy, a lovely countryside get away. Kim made it especially welcoming on our arrival by leaving flowers in all rooms and a basket of good things for breakfast, which was much appreciated. My son enjoyed sitting in the weeping willow - we always knew where to find him. The area is full of interesting places to go - Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury Tor and the pub in Godney. We definitely hope to return soon. Lucy and Mark

Lovely relaxing holiday in a very cosy comfortable cottage. Loved being able to go for wonderful walks with dog across the fields and off lead along the country roads . Kim is absolutely lovely and has furnished the barn beautifully and when we arrived had provided bread croissants home made jam milk and eggs from her chickens. Would love to stay again !

Lovely characterful barn. A full basket of goodies awaited our arrival. Nice and peaceful setting but plenty to do without travelling too far.

It was a most enjoyable Holiday in a well appointed cottage. the dogs were fascinated by the chickens, but you had to remember to shut the door behind you otherwise they would wander in! Very pleasant walking the lanes with the dogs (off lead as there was so little traffic) but despite its seeming isolation it was only 3 miles from Glastonbury, & 4 miles from Wells. We found Kim (the owner) very pleasant & helpful.

We had a such a great time at the Somerset Oak Barn, we really didn't want to leave. The setting was idyllic and the barn itself was like a home from home. All the touches, Kim the owner had provided, like flowers in every room and the wonderful basket of treats made us instantly feel welcome. We especially enjoyed the surrounding countryside, the landscape was stunning. It was amazingly quiet and peaceful, but with a fantastic local pub within walking distance. What more could you ask for? We will especially miss the chickens! Thank you for an amazing memorable holiday.

A lovely break in the beautiful Somerset Levels. The cottage was perfect and we appreciated all the thoughtful extras left by Kim..flowers in every room, croissants, home made jam and local bantam eggs as well as tea, coffee, bread, milk etc...Pretty garden to relax in. And I really appreciated the use of a bicycle to explore the local area It was necessary though to keep the our dog on the lead as the garden is not dog proof (this is flagged up in the details) and quite a bit of traffic passes along the lane...All in all, one of the nicest UTT cottages I have stayed in...would definitely return.

Beautiful cottage is a great setting - totally tranquil with the bonus of great nearby pub (The Sheppy) and amazing reclamation yard (Wells Reclamation). Would definitely stay again, very comfortable and perfect for a relaxing weekend.

Fantastic little cottage in a perfect location for a romantic break away. This cottage is in a lovely area very close to the town of Wells which was amazing, there is a pub a short walk away which was very quirky and interesting. The owner was very accommodating and left us a basket full of tea, bread, eggs, home made jam and savoury scones. She was happy to arrange anything you would specifically like for your arrival and was friendly throughout. We had a fantastic trip and would definitely recommend this cottage.

Our family of four stayed at Somerset Barn for Christmas 2015. The owner Kim was so helpful prior to our stay confirming there would be a Xmas tree there for us. When we arrived on Xmas eve we were thrilled with all the extras she had added for us ie a large welcome hamper, home made Xmas pies, flowers in every room, and the beautiful tree. The Barn is well equipped and both our teenagers were pleased with the large to and wifi!. The barn is situated in the country 5 mins walk from an award winning pub the Sheppey. Down the lane are lovely walks for dogs and a nature reserve. Wells a stunning old town in 10 min drive. Thank you Kim for making our stay so magical and for the extra time you took it decorating the Barn for us. Will love to stay here again.

Idyllic quaint cottage amongst trees and plants, so much to explore in the extensive grounds we saw toads, lots of birds, chickens, dragon flies, birds of prey and the lovely horse next door. Garden was a bit overgrown and wild but this added to the charm. the interior of the cottage was clean and spacious with a big TV and wifi! Perfect escapism for me and my mum and a huge novelty for my 4 year old daughter who lives in a big city. The local pub The Sheppey was brilliant with friendly staff and an eclectic vibe. The surrounding countryside was gorgeous and we had 4 warm sunny consecutive days which of course is always a bonus. Visited the lovely city of Wells, mystical Glastonbury and explored cheddar and the Mendip Hills. A lovely relaxing week in a stunning part of the world - thank you x

Lovely place to relax with a welcome of some basics such as milk, bread and butter in the kitchen and fresh flowers throughout. Saw a kingfisher, shooting stars and quite possibly some fairies during our stay here. Very peaceful with some great things to do locally such as Sunday lunch at the Sheppey, mystical tours of Glasto and sipping tea with the bishop at Wells. Could easily have stayed longer than 3 nights.

We had a lovely holiday here and the Barn was lovely. The garden needed a bit of TLC to be honest, but this may be because of the time of year. Our little girl loved the stuffed owl here (see the pictures) and I loved regular visits down the road to the Sheppey Pub - a cracking lively pub. Stay here and you won't go wrong.

'The barn was perfect for us with great views across the countryside... our 5 and 6 year olds loved rooting around in the gardens and chasing the chickens. The word quaint is a terrible cliche these days but it's difficult to think of anywhere it would apply better.' The Jones family

'It's not easy pleasing a 9 year old and a teenager (and their parents) but White Hart Barn hit the jackpot. Glastonbury Tor, Longleat, Wookey Hole, Bath and Bristol -we could easily have filled a second week. The house is deliciously chic but totally comfy and homely.' The Darby family

'Had an enchanting weekend in this beautifully converted property with its pleasing interiors and unique touches - loved the spacious roll top bath, the roomy Smeg fridge and the comfiest mattress I've ever slept on.' Frances & Chris
