Yr Hen Ysgubor

about the property

Wonderful old Snowdonia barn conversion family holiday cottage in North Wales, the perfect base for exploring the area and walking. Great quality and design inside, never even once been a single complaint!

A converted Welsh stone barn, Yr Hen Ysgubor (The Old Barn), is nestled in the Hermon Valley, overlooking fields and protected woodland. This beautiful location, in the Snowdonia National Park, provides access to fantastic walking and mountain biking straight from the door; alternatively you can just relax and enjoy the peaceful and secluded location.

See inside this beautiful Snowdonia retreat.

Sympathetically converted, Yr Hen Ysgubor retains much of its character with exposed stone walls, oak beams and Welsh slate floors. It is well insulated and has under floor heating and a log burning stove to keep you warm and cosy on those colder days.

Some of the best mountain bike trails in the world pass within a few hundred metres of the Yr Hen Ysgubor and the Coed y Brenin visitor centre is nearby. A short drive will put you on the doorstep of local scenic walks or at the foot of Cader Idris & the Rhinogs.

Yr Hen Ysgubor provides a peaceful secluded location to relax and unwind, with some of the best walking and mountain biking on your doorstep. It is just a 15 minute drive to Dolgellau which offers a range of pubs and restaurants. Another 15 minutes drive along the beautiful Barmouth estuary will get you to the coast and sandy beaches.

customer reviews for Yr Hen Ysgubor

The family and I were on holiday in Dolgellau to catch the best of the autumn in north Wales - it also happened to be my birthday. This was our second visit to Yr Hen Ysgubor; this time we stayed for a week, extending the four nights we stayed on our first visit. Once again, it did not disappoint. The cottage certainly satisfies the outdoor enthusiast: its secluded, close to the forest, a very short bike ride away from the Coed y Brenin trailheads, a short drive away from the beautiful Cader Idris and a variety of more child-friendly walks, and a 45 minutes drive to Betws-y-Coed. The cottage has a good selection of guide books and OS maps. The cottage also has a beautiful log burner, very comfortable beds, and a large enough family kitchen. We're already looking forward to a third visit!

Fabulous Cottage presented to a very high standard. It certainly delivers for anyone wanting peace and quiet in magnificent surroundings. All the modern comforts and very cosy. One minor point and it might be my phone. Google maps took me to the property next door which is about 400 metres from the cottage so it might be worth pointing that out for anyone arriving in the dark.

We really enjoyed our holiday at Yr Hen Ysgubor, thank you for the welcome welsh cakes and fresh flowers! The barn has been very thoughtfully renovated, warm, comfy and cosy. Wonderful to see the exposed roof structure upstairs. Lovely spacious, well equipped kitchen and comfortable lounge with nice dimmable lighting. The location is very peaceful, an ideal base for walking and cycling right on the doorstep on the many trails in Coed Y Brenin Forest and trips a little further afield into the spectacular mountains close by.

Really lovely cottage in a very peaceful location. Cottage is perfect for 4 with two comfortable and well decorated bedrooms. Open plan lounge with high ceiling and wood burner is the best place to chill. Kitchen spacious and well stocked. Forest location is so tranquil for just lazing or for active types walks and cycle routes are in abundance. Fab place.. could stay forever!!

Fabulous house and location for an active holiday. Much to keep you occupied on your doorstep. We got lucky with the April weather and spent the week walking, biking and bouncing (@Zipworld). The Old Barn has been brilliantly modernised - warm and cosy with great kitchen and galleried lounge with views to die for. We all wanted to stay longer and we will definitely be back!

Lovely cottage; well placed for a number of trips in the car and on foot and with everything other than food that we needed provided.

We had an amazing honeymoon at this beautiful barn. The barn was situated in the perfect location for a relaxing and secluded break with stunning forest walks on the doorstep.

We spent a fantastic 3 night break over New Year at Yr Hen Ysgubor. It's the perfect location if you want to get away from it all. Walks straight from the doorstep with a cosy wood burning stove to come home to. The barn had everything we needed and more. Our favourite UTT property so far. Thank you!

Wow! This place took our breath away when we arrived! Such a beautiful place in the most picturesque location. So peaceful and relaxing, the barn was so warm, cosy and had everything we needed and more! We had the most amazing week with our 2 girls (age 10 & 6). We visited the following places which were all not too far at all - Barmouth Beach, Bounce Below, Mount Snowdon, Beddgelert, Portmeirion (go after 3:30 & you get 15% off) and there are so many amazing walks you can do as you are literally in Coed y Brenin Forest Park. Although when we took our girls biking we started at the Visitor Centre on the bike trails to make it easier for them. Dolgellau was really close for us to pick up some shopping at the supermarket and they have some lovely places to eat. We had an Indian Takeaway the one night from the Lemon Grass which I would recommend! The extra touches from the Welsh Cakes & Milk on arrival, to so many thoughtful things - hot water bottles, loads of amazing DVD's, Board Games, CD's, Magazines etc. I even loved the super soft green throws you had from the National Trust. The quality of everything was just to such a high standard. We loved this place & will definitely be sharing with family & friends and will look to come back ! :-)

Our break at Yr Hen Ysgubor was the perfect relaxation after a busy festive period. Wonderfully located, warm and cosy yet spacious and luxurious, and extremely well kitted out, we wanted for nothing (well, possibly a little less rain!)

Despite horrendous wet and windy weather during the whole week, we really enjoyed our stay at Yr Hen Ysugbor. The barn was cosy, comfortable and warm set in delightful countryside. A haven for those seeking complete peace and quiet.

We have stayed in many UTT properties in Wales and loved them all. But this is probably the best. The location is amazing (someone in the visitor's book described it as "Mountain Bike Heaven" but it's great for walking too). The barn is wonderfully converted. And despite being a cold week in November, we were cosy all the time.

Amazing location, amazing cottage and an amazing holiday! Loved every minute of our stay...in the middle of nowhere but with a 15 min drive to shops and pubs! Cottage was very clean and was everything we wanted for a perfect autumn retreat! I would definately stay here again! Thank you!

The cottage is amazingly beautiful and situated in a gorgeous valley. We enjoyed glasses of wine on the terrace in the evenings, watching the red kites circle round the head of valley, and listening to.......wonderful silence. A real luxury bolt hole, and the best cottage we have ever stayed in. We will return!

A wonderful cottage in a beautiful setting, remote, peaceful and relaxing. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard and was extremely comfortable - a joy to stay in. The welcome tray with tea and Welsh Cakes was very thoughtful and just what we needed after the journey. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property and we will certainly visit again.

We had a great time at this property. Very secluded, cosy and well maintained cottage next to a forest. Plenty of space for our family of four. Lots of great walks around. We would love to come back.

Near Dogellau yet very secluded, this chic and comfortable barn conversion is bright yet cosy. Approached through a magical forest road, we left the real world behind. In a area of majestic mountains and coastal walks, just get off the main roads and you can find no better landscapes anywhere.

We had a lovely stay in this cottage, nestled amongst the hills and trees. We were really comfortable and cosy! Possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, and I am very hard to please! In fact the whole family loved it. Lots of great walks around, and spoilt for choice for places to eat. But if we felt like staying in, there was everything we could need to prepare a meal ourselves and relax for the evening. I can reccomend this cosy cottage very highly!

We had a fantastic time at this property, it really has the 'wow' factor in terms of location and facilities. It has a great cosy feel, but also has plenty of space for everyone (we are a family of four). We really enjoyed the surroundings and the nearby visitor centre and mountain biking at Coed Y Brenin were a great day out. We would love to come back, it's our favourite UTT so far!

This was a lovely well maintained cottage.and the area was superb. The cottage was a little cold and maybe not as traditional as we like but this by no means spoilt our holiday. We will be looking at booking more holidays with UTT. Thankyou. Linda and Paul. ( fromLancashire)

What a wonderful place. We felt a million miles from anywhere after that trip down the bumpy track! An incredibly well equipped and maintained cottage, a warm welcome too with scones all ready for us. Much bigger than it looked in the photos, so plenty of room if 4 of you. Although fight for the double bed.....SO comfy. The added bonus of the boot/utility room meant everything was out the way so we could spread out on the lovely big sofas and listen to the silence. Lovely and warm with the underfloor heating, and that fire throws out tons of heat! Our favourite UTT so far. Smashing.

Our stay at Yr Hen Ysgubor was just fantastic- a great get-away weekend from the hustle of London. The place is absolutely fantastic, was extremely clean and the welcome scones and jam were much appreciated. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a luxury, secluded get-away, with the possibility of numerous out-door activities! We can't wait to return soon!!!
