about the property

Traditional Donegal cottage by the shore with access to private sandy beach. Sleeps 4, dogs welcome.

"We walked outside to a scene that electrified the senses: the distinctive smell of seaweed drying in the inlet below; a wondrous vista out to a long bay that looked like it was lit from within. The only sound was a distant tractor on the single-track lane.

It’s for elemental experiences like these that people venture to this part of Ireland." The Guardian reviewing Teach Mhici

A traditional Irish vernacular cottage, completely refurbished for 2017, and sitting on the shore of the Atlantic with access to our private, sandy beach.

Teach Mhici (Irish for Miki's Cottage) is the result of a substantial renovation and restoration project by Under the Thatch...but, we feel, worth it as it has the most wonderful location...and location is everything. Spend your days fishing or crabbing, or reading in your private cove, then home to the turf fire and fall asleep listening to the sound of the waves.

There's one (Kingsize) bedroom, and a small (double) loft over the main living space. We've added a large comfortable bathroom, and insulated everywhere before we lined it in wood from the loal forest. It's a simple, but wonderful place. Come and enjoy one of the most remarkable and unspoilt coastlines in Europe...and start with your own. See our lovely video of Miki's here

Fly to:

Sail with either Stenaline or Irish Ferries to:

  • Belfast via Liverpool/ Stranraer (2 hr. 35 mins. away)

  • Dun Laoghaire via Holyhead (3 hr. 35 mins.)
  • Rosslare via Fishguard/ Pembroke Dock (5 hr. 15 mins and and an amazing drive)
    (Tip - ferries cheapest Mon>Thu)

customer reviews for *NEW - 'Teach Mhici' - Miki's Cottage

Despite my love of Donegal I confess to having had concerns about spending a week in a cottage with no television and the probability of limited or no wifi to act as distractions in the event of poor weather. Now back home after our holiday at Teach Mhici I am delighted to report that my concerns were unfounded. The cottage is exactly as described, comfortable and oozing with irish character. The location was perfect for what we wanted and allowed my husband and I along with our dog to walk from the door to the beach immediately below (at low tide), to walk 3 minutes around the corner to another beach which allowed for reasonable walking opportunities (again at low tide), or to walk 20-30 minutes to the extensive and stunningly beautiful Dooey beach. I found the online booking process to be efficient and straightforward and the ability to contact relevant staff, including the owner, to answer questions following arrival at the property excellent. We had a wonderful week at the cottage despite the challenges of Donegal weather and in fact, as a result of photographs we took and sent to our daughter in Germany, she has now booked a week at Teach Mhici next summer for her and her family. Super cottage, super location and super holiday!

We had a fabulous time at Miki's cottage. The location is spectacular with beautiful sunsets and beaches all within walking distance of the cottage. Easy access to all the sites and a comfortable cottage to return to. Greg was very welcoming and helpful with suggestions of places to visit. Donegal is a magical county to visit. I've come home fully refreshed for busy Autumn

This was everything we hoped for and more. The location is stunning, whatever the weather. We enjoyed many walks on our own beach (which was fairly extensive when the tide was out) plus visiting many of the picturesque bays and coastlines of Donegal. The cottage is immaculate and furnished to a very high standard with lots of space. It fuses the traditional with modern home comforts - great shower. There is absolutely nothing to fault. Thanks for sharing this very special Irish cottage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our break in Donegal. From walking on Dooey beach to exploring the surrounding area - we even spotted a seal from the cottage! Nancy's in Ardara completely met our high expectations with a seafood lunch followed by a browse through the great craft shops in town. Elliot's Bar (just 5 mins away) provided a very entertaining evening with traditional music and craic! Valerie & Robert, Rosemary & Gavin (County Down)

We absolutely loved this place!!!!! UTThas done an amazing job restoring this old cottage, it's spotless clean, warm and very comfortable and really nicely decorated. The location is perfect! beautiful quiet area, at night all you can hear is the ocean. The location is great for exploring all the amazing sights that Donegal has to offer and the cottage is only a short stroll from beautiful Dooey Beach. 10/10 for this little cottage! We will be back! - Lonneke (Wicklow)

What an amazing stay! Very chilled and relaxing, and such a beautiful cottage. Enjoyed walks here at Dooey beach and over at Portnoo as well as trip up to Dunfanaghy beach. Good pubs all over - all dog-friendly. Didn't want to come home! - Kelly & Paul McFadden (Glasgow/Belfast)

The Cottage is really excellent and in such a beautiful place. We were delighted to be the first to stay after UTT's renovations and had the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend here. Cannot emphasise enough how relaxing this place is - if you are looking for a complete getaway it would be hard to beat. Beaches nearby (Dooey in particular) are up there with the best you'll find. Couple of good pubs nearby and a 20 min drive takes you to some really nice wee towns (Ardara amongst them). The cottage itself has been done to a really high standard and has everything you need. Owner was a very friendly and helpful host, when he came down to say hello. We will be back! P.
