about the property

Priced for up to 6 staying, can sleep 6. Griff Rhys Jones’ luxury holiday cottage on Strumble Head in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, West Wales. Dog and family friendly.

  • 'Top 10 Best New Holiday Cottages in UK' - Observer
  • 'Restoration Triumph' - The Times

This delightful cottage has been converted from a grain loft by author / TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones and his family on their coastal farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The conservation and restoration of the farm was the subject of the popular BBC TV Series 'A Pembrokeshire Farm'. The estate is exclusively advertised through Under the Thatch, and Granar is generally considered the most luxurious of the collection.

Walk to the famous lighthouse on Ynys Meicl where you'll find a whale and dolphin-watching station (2.5 miles), or explore the trails on the estate including a small woodland, some ruins and a small play area for kids. 9 minutes drive (3 miles) to Abermawr beach - one of the most impressive (and yet least visited) in West Wales. Sustainability was at the core of the conservation project here, and you'll find two EV chargers available for electric vehicles.

Fly fishing for rainbow trout in two ponds available on site. Catch & release, arrange with estate manager after booking.

customer reviews for Granar Trehilyn

Top drawer. Great accommodation, perfect location for exploring Pembrokeshire. No complaints. We will be back.

- Andy F,
2024

Thank you for the stay. The cottage is beautiful, very tastefully renovated, warm and clean. The cottage is well equipped which is great when staying somewhere remote which meant we mainly self catered.

- Carolyn B,
2024

We had a thoroughly enjoyable 5 days in this beautifully restored and maintained cottage. We could not fault the accommodation and facilities. The walks around the farm were great, especially with the small children who found plenty to do and excite their imaginations. The table tennis in the barn was a brilliant distraction too and kept them active even in the rain. There is lots to see and do in the locality, so we can strongly recommend the property even though it may seem on the pricey side.

- David B,
2024

This is a very pretty cottage in a stunning, remote location. The cottage has a lovely feel, and has some wonderful features. The master bedroom suite is spacious and charming. The electric car charger was an added bonus, as was having acres of land around the property, the shop and excellent recycling. However, we couldn't recommend the use of the tiny twin room, which is described as 'cosy' but we found it dingy and one bed up is right up a ladder and not very accessible. I am glad we ended up not having to use this room! Also, the downstairs wet room which is intended for use by guests in the downstairs bedroom and as a cloakroom, was damp smelling and could have benefitted from a shelf or somewhere for guests to put any of their bathroom stuff. All in all, it's a nice cottage but we felt it was rather expensive in August for the accommodation provided.

A superb week in a wonderful property. Everything was there, superb design, comfy beds and great beaches nearby. Thank you ☺️

- Claire M,

We had a wonderful few days at Granar Trehilyn. A very comfortable and tastefully designed property. Loved the use of industrial materials. Beautiful walks straight from the front door and easy drive to St David’s and Whitesands beach for bodyboarding and in the other direction to Newport and arty shops and fab lunch at The Golden Lion. I’m still smiling. Annie

Lovely warm cottage in peaceful rural setting. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing week. Diolch!

We have been to Trehilyn a few times now and cannot recommend The Granar highly enough. It is like a home from home. The local walks are amazing. We will be back!

- Lucy P,
2024

We loved our stay at Granar Trehilyn, what a warm and welcoming place it is, we felt at home immediately! The house is cleverly and stylishly converted. I found everything to be well thought out: the kitchen well equipped, the beds comfortable, towels huge and fluffy, books, games, dvds, we discovered too late ping pong in the barn. Stunning walks from the door to Strumblehead and the coastal path with loads more a short car journey away. Our stay was a short one, but we will be back for more. It is a beautiful area with lots to do and see… also I would really like to try out the swimming ponds on site, but needed some warmer weather! Thank you for a memorable stay, no complaints whatsoever from us.

- Jenny M,

Holiday home was fantastic everything you could wish for lovely walks and loads to visit will definitely be back

- Darrel M,

Granar Trehilyn is a beautiful stone cottage set in stunning surroundings near the coast. It has been tastefully renovated and despite the ferocious weather we endured, was snug and homely, especially the log burner and under-floor heating. There are however no radiators or towel rails in ether bathrooms thus made it difficult to dry the large towels provided and both rooms were cold however we were provided with small radiators to assist matters. There is little space in kitchen area to store food (dry goods) so we implemented a box outside but in summer months this would be tricky however we liked the open plan kitchen/diner set up in the house. Some minor tweaks/additions would make this a perfect place to stay. The new 'shope' on site is also a brilliant idea as one is quire remote! We would like to return to see GT in spring or summer as it will, no doubt, be very different!

- Jane F,

A fabulous and beautiful location and particularly good for walking direct from the base thanks to the plethora of footpaths in the area- the coastal paths are especially stunning. The cottage is gorgeous, cosy and has everything you need. We’ll definitely be back.

Stunning accomodation and quirky finds on the walk around the farm. Perfect even in the rain

- Jeanette cattell ,

We had such a lovely stay at Granar Trehilyn and will definitely stay again. It has everything you need, is very comfortable and is finished to a really high standard. It’s in a great location for visiting some beautiful areas of Pembrokeshire and we loved all the little touches.

- Sarah B,
2023

Excellent as always. The Granar is a lovely mix of old meets new and is done superbly well. Spacious cottage with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The Trehilyn buildings are all well stocked, comfortable holiday cottages. The Granar was perfect for us and we will be back.

- Zoe W,
2023

We had such a great week staying in Granar Trehilyn! A comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated cottage which has been refurbished carefully to celebrate the building's agricultural history. There were six adults and two dogs in our party but the living spaces are generous and well designed so we didn't feel cramped. Many thoughtful touches with easy recycling and loads of suggestions for local activities and information in the guest book and in the table tennis barn/shop. The other cottages on the estate were also full but the cottage had enough privacy and the parking instructions encouraged thoughtful behaviour towards other residents. The location was perfect for our family with walks along the coastal path, seal spotting along the many coves - and surfing and swimming within a short drive/reasonable walk. We will be back!

- John P,
2023

Our stay at Granar Trehilyn was perfect. We had a good welcome on arrival and the accommodation was comfy, tasteful yet simple. The nature and woodland trails were great for us to explore with baby Granddaughter and dogs. The property and surrounding area is peaceful and unspoilt.

- Lorraine L,

This is our 5th time staying here - the first time at Granar Trehilyn. The craftsmanship was just superb. See you again soon!

- Dr dewi griffiths ,

Stylish, comfortable cottage for our family of four adults. The beds and bedding were super comfortable which is always appreciated by us when we go away. The weather was not kind to us for most of our trip so the underfloor heating, smart TV and nespresso machine were very much welcomed! Beautiful part of the world and the short walk up to the rocks to watch the sun go down was wonderful. Would definitely stay here again.

- Kirsten N,
2023

Absolutely lovely property, yet again! Kitchen equipped for all our needs and excellent quality linen. We will return. Owen, Angela, Alun and Heulwen.

This was our second visit. The house is wonderful, cosy and modern at the same time. The farmstead is beautiful and peaceful, we will be back very soon..

- Deborah L,

wonderful accommodation, luxurious yet cosy. Perfect for a large family. Area is beautiful too. We ran to the Light house on Christmas day, past Strumble Head- thoroughly recommend.

- Amanda A,
2022

The Granar was tasefully restored and furnished.I liked the wood, slate and stone and the old farmhouse furniture. Kitche appliances were excellent and crockery, glasses etc. A wooden shelf would have beeb useful to store the dry food like bread, cakes, cereal etc.Good size dining table. Big bath but bit slippery as no bath mat. Very clean.Beds and bedding excellent. I would also like to add that dealing with you has been a pleasure and Katie in particular has been most helpful.

- Helen P,
2022

We had a wonderful holiday at Granar Trehilyn. The design and attention to detail made everything perfect. It’s a really beautiful, well equipped house and the whole of Trehilyn is fantastic. Anthony and Shirley were so helpful and lovely to chat to. We’re looking forward to our next visit.

- Verity E,
2022

Excellent holiday accommodation, very warm with underfloor heating and log burner, nice big bath and good showers. Great location for walking. Had everything needed for a relaxing break. I’m terms of tweaks that would make things even better, the beds could do with some mattress toppers as they were a little firm. Would recommend sweeping the cobwebs as they are quite noticeable. There is no room / shelves for storing food that doesn’t belong in the fridge so it sits on the counter top. Cushions for the dining chairs / bench would be more comfortable too but none of this spoilt the enjoyment.

- Melissa C,
2022

An enjoyable break, we left a day earlier in respect of the queens funeral and potential travel difficulties. The cottage lived up to its description. The absence of any instructions for equipment although it was clear they should have been available was a shame. We did not think it was worth troubling the housekeeper.

- Geoffrey H,
2022

Thank you for allowing us to stay in your cottage which was clean, spacious and comfortable and in a great location for the coast. We had a fantastic time and were rather sorry to leave! We would definitely recommend Granar Trehilyn and hope to stay there again.

- Chris C,
2022

We had a great four days at Granar Trehelin. It suited our party perfectly. We really liked that there was plenty of room for everyone. We, the grandparents, were undisturbed upstairs and the parents with the children (7 & 10) were together in the downstairs rooms. off the kitchen. The boys loved going to the little 'shop' opposite to buy some sweets and put the money for it into the honesty box. They also could try their hand at playing table tennis there and borrow a surfboard. In We could safely let them to explore from the cottage on their own by the little stream, a short walk down a country lane without traffic. Finally, our dog was safe too with the gate closed and enjoyed his holiday with the family 'pack'. We took day trips to Aberteifi, Fishguard and St David's and on the way back to Swansea went to Saundersfoot for a boat trip. The weather too was perfect. We would like to return on another occasion for a family break.

- Ruth T,
2022

This was our second time in Granar Trehilyn and found we loved it even more. It's such a special space to spend time in a fantastic location. We walked stretches of the coastal path and found new coves and beaches this time. For those that are thinking of booking this cottages I would recommend bringing blankets for the living space if you like being cosy (not that it's cold) and baskets/bags to keep food as there is very little storage space (none really) and it's important to realise that the twin beds include one up a steep ladder which can be tricky for small children or adults!

- Lisa heledd jones ,
2022

Great holiday so thank you. Lovely cottage - as good as promised. Stunning artwork and quality furniture. Feels like it’s been put together by someone with great taste who wants you to feel special as their house guest. Nothing went wrong at all but helpful Housekeeping gentleman checked with us. Beautiful farm and setting. We would definitely return especially if we get weather as good as we had this time!.

- Simon H,
2022

We had a great stay at Granar Trehilyn. The cottage is in a lovely location and finished exceptionally well. We enjoyed exploring the immediate surroundings and getting out for some walks along the coastal path. Although the weather was not brilliant, we came back to a cosy cottage and fired up the burner, which kept us all toasty. The small honesty shop and indoor table tennis were great additions. Our internet connection was not working when we arrived, but a quick call to the housekeeper resolved that and someone called in on us the following morning to check that all was well, so excellent support and service. One suggestion for improving UTT's provision would be a set of directions that are more helpful for those arriving after sunset. Because there are no street lights and no signs on the farm entrance itself some additional detail about the last few hundred metres to the farm and of the different cottages within the farm, would really help when it is dark..

- Stephen R,
2022

Blissful weekend spent at Granar Trehilyn. Such a beautifully designed cottage and very clean. Only comment like previous reviewer is more privacy screening needed but perfect otherwise. Diolch

- Bethan P,
2021

The renovations at Granar Trehilyn are stunning! You can tell that real craftsmanship has gone into everything. The wood paneled walls and stairwell are particularly good. The kitchen is exceptionally well stocked – every pot, pan, grater etc. you could want. Our favourite room was the sitting room, which is cosy and comfortable. Fast broadband meant that streaming a film on Amazon or Netflix (on the smart TV) was never an issue. The bedrooms are very comfortable too. Mattresses, feather and down duvets and pillows and linens are a high quality. Overall it makes for a wonderful place to stay nd the location too is perfect for Strumble Head, Abermawr and easy access to the coastal walk. The only improvement we’d suggest would be for better screening outside the kitchen sliding doors. This space is where the little shop for guests is and when people are going in or out or standing outside to chat it is actually quite close to the kitchen so people can see you eating your porridge! There is a trellis there now but the planting hasn’t taken so perhaps something like willow would give a better sense of privacy.

- Matthew M,
2021

I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed staying at Granar Trehilyn. The cottage was so comfortable and I really appreciated the attention to detail that has gone into the renovation - made it such a joy to return to after a day's hard graft on the coastal paths! The nature trail was great first thing in the morning with the dog and it was a real highlight to head out to watch the sunset from the fort or Pwll Deri. The shop is a great idea and so is the table tennis for those wet interludes. We packed a lot in and I'd love to come back and perhaps explore the eastern coastal paths next time.

- Richard D,
2021

A truly beautiful part of the Pembrokeshire coast. Granar is wonderfully appointed. Contemporary but cosy. Our second trip to Trehilyn. Just about to book a third. Highly recommended for those who like coastal cottages with a bit of class

- Peter r james ,
2021

Lovely cottage, incredible quality. The cottage is in a perfect location to explore North Pembrokeshire with some good walks without having to drive. Some easy changes would make it even better. Being a stone cottage it was really warm and the duvet, although of the highest quality was a 9 tog. It would be helpful to have one that you could separate i to Winter and Summer, say a 3 and 4.5 tog. We had our dog with us and although there was a sweeping brush it would have been useful to have a vacuum cleaner as well. There was no storage place for food. The cupboards were full of either plates or pans. Having said these things, they’re only minor and didn’t spoil our holiday and we’re looking forward to returning.

- Peter R,
2021

Loved our holiday - can't wait to return

- Jane C,
2021

We have just returned from our second UTT, holiday in Pembrokeshire; both within striking distance of Stumble Head. Lovely, very clean, well equipped and comfortable accommodation. On our nature walk to the ruined cottage we caught the attention of a herd of cows that then accompanied us as far as they could; on their side of the fence of course!

- Chris P,
2021

The location of this stunning sensitively restored property is absolutely second to none...not only are you surrounded by so much rugged beauty that can be reached easily on foot from the door, the garden, meadow and natural surroundings directly accessed are just stunning. If there wasn't so much glorious coastline and countryside to explore, we would have happily stayed put for the whole week! Our little girl was in heaven with so much to explore and the facilities inside the cottage were great for cooking, eating and socialising in supreme comfort for the five of us. On site, we were warmly welcomed and any queries were resolved immediately - all in all, just perfect!

- Kate V,
2021

We had a wonderful time at Granar Trehilyn. The accommodation is extremely comfortable and everything was provided for us. We particularly enjoyed watching the DVD’s about the renovation of the propertys. And we love Pembrokshire!

- Claire T,
2021

We had a simply lovely time at Granar Trehilyn. The house was very comfortable and well-appointed and the kids loved the shop. A hairdryer would have been welcome - and we were very puzzled at the lack of draining rack or board, which made washing up tricky. Other than that, it was great.

- Esther C,
2021

Had four nights in this beautiful well equipped house. Once again another gem of a cottage booked with utt! Brilliant location and so warm and cozy. Absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend .

- Lorraine C,
2021

Epic and beautiful- the cottage is sublime and the surroundings are inspiring- we had a lovely time - It is the best place we have ever stayed.

- Hugo B,
2020

We were very lucky to be able to travel within Wales for a short holiday this month. It was our third stay at Trehilyn and our first on the relatively new Granar conversion - another brilliant transformation of a former agricultural building into a beautiful and functional living space. The presentation of the cottage is immaculate, with very good coronavirus procedure and resources to make everyone safe. This is a wonderful corner of Pembrokeshire, but when it’s raining and windy outside, it’s lovely to enjoy this warm and cosy building.

- Helen leahy ,
2020

We had a wonderful stay in beautiful Granar Trehilyn. It's a really special spot.

- Georgia P,
2020

We loved our stay at ‘New’ Granar Trehilyn. Beautifully converted, historic character combined with exciting stylish contemporary and comfortable interiors. Everything worked so well from the layout to the heating and plumbing. Brilliant lighting throughout. Fantastic views from the bedroom. The whole Strumble Head site is charming and the small ‘shop’ thoughtfully stocked. This part of Pembrokeshire is stunningly beautiful with many coastal walks beaches and wildlife moments all around.

- Marilyn H,
2020

We had such a lovely holiday in Granar Trehilyn! Excellent booking system and communication throughout; such care from Shirley and Wayne; a beautifully appointed conversion and site with all one could need; and the coastal path within walking distance. Heaven for us. And only one day of rain - when we could enjoy the cosy house for a while! We felt very safe, very well serviced and even a 'shop' next door - perfect!

- Julia T,
2020

What a fantastic place to stay! Lots of space for the 4 of us and a small & exhausted dog. Kitchen is well equipped, beds are dead comfy, and bathrooms and showers feel very luxurious. We’ll definitely be back,
