'Teach Mhicí' - Mickey's Cottage

We had the most wonderful Christmas in Traighenna Bay! It’s our 3rd visit this year and I have no doubt we will be back! As always the pictures do not do the cottage justice. Stunning surroundings, peaceful walks and a warm, comfortable picturesque cottage. It’s a home from home. We had the best 4 nights and our only regret is that we didn’t book a longer stay! Enjoyed a week in November, this little spot is so beautiful and comfortable, arrived to a warm spotlessly clean Mhici's, popped the bubbles in the fridge, lit the turf stove and rustled up a grand supper in the well equipped kitchen, slept so well in the most comfortable bed, and even saw the Northern lights from the bedroom window on a couple of evenings. We spent the week exploring this little corner of Donegal, and there is so much space and far reaching views to explore, we had all weathers, but never didn't go out, you'll need a coat but the weather will always change very quickly on this wild Atlantic coast. Our return to Mhici's was always a joy to see the ever changing seascape over the bay and your own little cove, we had evening strolls down to the little beach to star gaze - you can see the Milky Way. Do read UTT's welcome notes so that you get the local's recommendations for some excellent food and drink, and experience some very genuine Irish kindness and hospitality. Travel from UK is easy and hassle free on the many ferry routes. It really is just like in the UTT pictures (better actually !!!!) .................. don't over think it, just book it. Cozy cottage with lots of comfort set in the most beautiful location. Bed was one of the best we've slept in. Great to see the traditional Irish cottage merged with modern touch. the fireplace really felt at centre of everything and it was lovely to walk on beach and come back to stove blazing. Bathroom/shower facilities were great, really clean and open. Amazing little touches that respect the traditional aesthetic of countryside such as the half/cottage door, few pieces of wooden furniture and religious paintings. Didn't see any seals but hopefully next time we will. - Eva

Had the most peaceful and relaxing break. The views from the cottage windows are like paintings. It felt like you had your own private beach, which was great to clear your mind. Would recommend to a yon needing to switch off.

Wow! Perfect cottage by the sea with stunning views and only birdsong & sound of the sea. Swam every day, twice, watched herons & cormorants fishing, long walks, relaxed with our books, never wanted to leave. A real gem in this beautiful corner of Ireland. Thank you UTT - we can’t wait to return.

What a beautiful place! Honestly, would have been happy to just sit and look at the view for a week. The house was spotlessly clean, and had all the amenities needed for an enjoyable stay (including properly sharp knives - anyone who’s stayed at other rental properties will know how vanishingly rare this is!). The beds were wonderfully comfortable and cosy, and the shower was great. We weren’t very lucky with the weather, but this didn’t stop us from enjoying the beautiful beaches. Our kids had a great time scrambling over the rocks and trying to catch the tiny fish in the rock pools. They didn’t want to leave! Thank you for a lovely, restful stay. Loved our stay at this beautiful cottage. It was cosy, warm, clean, and had the best views. Perfect for the R&R we needed for a few days, and we'd love to have stayed for longer. The welcome pack from owners was very thoughtful. Highly recommend if you wish to get away from the hustle of life for a few days. I also recommend contacting Taru Burstall who lives close by and offers acupuncture and massage treatments. Such a treat for added relaxation in already peaceful surroundings. Míle buíochas! - Rhona

If you are looking for a remote location filled with beauty to relax and unwind, this is the place!!! The view from the cottage is like that of a fairytale. However, we did not see seals. The manager was very responsive and helpful! We were welcomed with a bottle of wine and firewood! Bethany

Our stay at Micky’s was dynomite. After waiting for so long we finally made it to Ireland. We were all able to relax but get out to amazing places too. Even jumped in the ocean one morning! What a great cottage. Would love to return!

Words cannot describe the stay we were so lucky to experience in Teach Mhicí. Magical part of Donegal and very cathartic/meditative place to spend some time. The link with Seamus Heaney, the sunsets and rises, the seal watching and the sea water swimming. We didn’t leave the area at all. Just swept up in the beauty, privacy and wildness of it all. Stop in a nearby supermarket and stock up. Brave the weather. Light the fire. Walk, read and swim. Great great hosts. Couldn’t fault. Local shop Gallaghers great for last minute things and maybe a bottle of wine if run out

Beautiful clean warm cottage, so many extras left for guests, beach bag, picnic blanket etc. Fabulous information pack. Amazing setting and very friendly people. Location is ideal for peace and quiet and relaxing but also very easy to get to main road if you want to visit other places. Beaches are so clean and close by Dooey beach is stunning. Had the most enjoyable short break here. If you want to just get away from it all this place is perfect. Only noise you hear is bird song and the waves. We have two small dogs and the beach walks with them were lovely. (Had the beach to ourselves . Very happy dogs ). Will definitely be back . A heavenly spot ! Really good for the soul . We stayed two nights, but we would have loved to stay longer. This place is a GEM and photos really don’t do it justice. The inside is cozy and comfortable, and the bathroom was so nice and spacious. The beds, OH THE BEDS! The mattresses are so comfortable. We literally had to look them up because we want to buy them. Lol. Highly recommend! - Shelby

We had a two night stay at Mickeys cottage with our dog. Our only regret is not being able to stay longer! The cottage was unique, quirky and spotless.The location was breathtaking with amazing views across the bay. Very close to Dooey beach for a great dog walk. Hope to return in the near future.

We had a wonderful stay at Teach Mhicí and really didn’t want to leave! It is a gorgeous cottage - so comfortable, cosy and beautifully furnished Complete peace and quiet (yet not isolated) with stunning views all around. It was great to be able to swim in the bay and nip back across the road for a warm shower. We enjoyed exploring the local area then returning to the cottage to light the fire and settle down for the evening. The perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries. We are already thinking about when we can return. Thank you for sharing this special place.

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your amazing property Greg - your refit is of the highest quality and we so enjoyed every minute of our time in Teach Mhici and felt very sad to leave in the end. We loved the short walks to the nearby unspoilt beaches and also the drive through amazing scenery to the Glenveagh National Park which had superb walks alongside the pretty lough and then a great tea room at the end in the castle. The cottage feels very cosy yet traditional and has everything you could ever need including a wonderful shower and a very comfortable huge bed. It was just what we needed and hope that we can come back one day! Also, thanks to Anna the housekeeper for all her help.

Fantastic location, beautiful and quiet. We had everything we needed in this cosy, clean cottage and our son particularly enjoyed sleeping in the loft. It was lovely to wake to the sounds of sea. We had no problems accessing the cottage. We’ll be back to visit again soon. Thank you - Tracey

Wonderful location. For us (a couple) it was a great place to sit and relax Plenty of walks, swimming in the bay. Great communication before we got there, including recommendations of where to eat and what to do, but We didn't bother going to dinner in the end, and just spent more time at the picnic table in the bay (great idea there) My advice is to bring plenty of supplies and hide the car keys until your checking out. Definitely hope to be back. - Peter

Absolutely idyllic in every way! The cottage is a fantastic base for a family trip to Donegal and what a bonus to have almost direct access to little Dooey beach. Our dog loved the freedom and exploring the many other local beaches including Big Dooey and Portnoo. - Brian

This holiday let is completely unique - it would not be to everyone's taste, as it is quirky, and probably a bit basic for the average traveller - but I loved it - the close proximity to the sea, the beautiful sandy beach and the ever changing light. I wished I had booked for a longer stay and was sad to leave. Shame about the weather, though!!

A beautiful cottage restored with love in spectacular Donegal. At low tide the little private inlet beach becomes a nice safe swimming spot (consider bringing wetsuits !). The giant dune system at the far end of Dooey Beach is one of the wonders of the world. Or just lean on the half door and look out on the peace and quiet and the mountains across the bay. This was the first time for me and my daughter in the cottage and it is hard to put into words how stunning both the cottage and location are! The cottage is so cosy and warm, and is the perfect location for relaxation.  The whole place is spotless with everything you need for a fantastic break. We met Anna, the housekeeper on arrival and she is so friendly and welcoming, and the welcome pack we received is the best I have ever known at a holiday cottage! I cannot think of anything negative at all as this place is simply perfect in every way,  and we cannot wait to return

A perfect place to get away from it all. A relaxing break with nothing but sounds of the ocean and birds singing. Our dog had the time of her life, so glad we brought her with us. A very very special place. We came up here to switch off from everything and recharge and that is exactly what happened! We were very lucky with the weather and as a result got to spend time at some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. A really tranquil few days! Exactly what was needed when wanting to escape the city and reset. Went there to write and was the perfect environment for anyone else looking to get the creative juices going. Perfect for a 2-3 day retreat and would def come back - Joe

The cottage is sublime. We spent a long weekend at the cottage at the end of January; the accommodation and location were absolute perfection. The cottage feels like it's at the edge of Ireland. We had hoped to swim in the sea given it's right at your doorstep, but since the weather was stormy most the weekend, we stayed on land and enjoyed a few fresh walks on the neighbouring beaches. The house was very comfortable and the had everything you'd need for a cosy few days by the fire. Cannot wait to return, whatever the weather! - Fatima

A few days and nights at this cottage walks along the beach, dips in the sea and cosy evenings by the stove will have you making trips to the West of Ireland and Donegal, in particular, a regular thing. Super dog-friendly, we brought our sausage dog, Bobby, with us and he loved it. We felt safe, warm and relaxed the whole time. Cooked all our meals in the cottage and rang in the new year with a homemade shepherd's pie, a few glasses of wine and we sat and watched the amazing stars twinkle above the sea. - Gillian

Just magical! We’ve never visited anywhere so beautiful! Due to covid cancellations we ended up visiting October half term- expecting it to be grey and rainy- we were so wrong! The autumn sun and rusty tones of the natural landscape were spectacular, the cottage was homely and cosy, perfect for a country getaway. The cottage is perfectly situated a stones throw from the sea, beautifully decorated and all the amenities you’ll need. Our hosts and housekeeper were all so accommodating- we’re already discussing our return visit. Thanks again!

Amazing location, 2m from the waters edge. Beautiful rustic cottage with a lovely little kitchen and an excellent shower, which is all important if you're getting in the water multiple times a day as we were! The main bedroom is lovely, a very comfortable mattress. The sleeping loft bed is a bit of a scramble but would be for kids or one adult. The mattress is super comfy and its wonderful to be able to look up through the skylight at night. Centrally heated and instant hot water makes this such a cosy warm hideaway. A twin hob, oven and microwave made meals easy peasy. The woodburner is there for cooler nights and is warm and evocative. We were blessed with a bit of beautiful weather and made the most of swimming off the sandy beach and off the rocks, driving round the coast to the plethora of outstanding beaches nearby. 100% recommend this beautiful getaway. If I get the chance I will definitely be back.- Naomi

My wife and I spent three days here recently and it is definitely the best cottage we have stayed in. It is an old house but restored beatifully and modernised. The location is perfect with a private beach and another stunning beach nearby. We were also lucky to get great weather and it is a beautiful place to sit and enjoy the evening after a days sightseeing. Donegal is a beautiful county with so much to see and do. We climbed the Slieve League cliffs, visited Glenveagh National Park, walked the beautiful beaches at Dooey, Dunfanaghy, Rossnowlagh and Marvagh. The hosts also left a very nice welcoming pack. We would highly recommend to anyone for a stay. - John and Nikki

Fab location, staying here is good for the soul. The beach outside property is so calm and the waves at dooey beach were amazing. My 13 year old couldn't get enough of them. The cottage had everything you could think of, the shower was a highlight after the sea swims. Beautifully renovated cottage in a fabulous location for the sea. The views make you stop and take time to take it all in. Constantly changing sea and sky. Easy to get in to swim from the little beach. Picnic tables located to make the most of the scenery and peace. Fantastic shower. Previous people have commented on the firm bed. I was a bit concerned about this as our bed at home is super soft. However while the mattress is firm we found it very comfortable. The quilt was really cosy. Lovely spot. We had an amazing stay at Mickey’s Cottage and were sad to leave such a special place. We felt right at home as soon as we opened the door. Everything was immaculate and we were left some lovely welcome gifts. The scenery from the windows of the private beach and beyond are simply breathtaking. Our border collie, Lily, loved exploring the beaches during the day! Dooey Beach is spectacular and we were amazed to be almost always the only people on it. This is the perfect spot to relax and unwind. The house is great, very comfortable and the access to the beach is 5 star, a 30 second walk from the house. We were paddle boarding and swimming everyday. Book in good time, as this place is rarely available, its so good. - Philip

We had an amazing couple of days stay at the cottage. Waking up to that view each morning was spectacular, its a gem of a location and the cottage itself is so cosy and inviting. Our stay at Teach Mhicí was most enjoyable. To get away from the every day pace of life and stay for a few days in such a remote and beautiful place was incredible. The cottage itself was beautiful with an old world feel yet with all the mod cons, not to mention your own private beach. We will definitely book another one of Under The Thatch houses but we might try another one of there incredible locations.

Absolutely loved our cottage stay. It was very easy to check in and the place was spotless! The private beach and beach a short walk away were real highlights for us and our puppy. It is the perfect location to completely get away from it all and relax while being a close enough drive to lots of beautiful spots in Donegal. Beautiful old Irish cottage that has been modernised so warm and cosy while remaining authentic. The most amazing views and walks from the front door. I saw three seals on the beach a few mornings. The cottage is immaculately kept, the shower is amazing. The private beach and 7acres of land are all beautiful, I highly recommend going there and experiencing it yourself. This place is truly unbelievable, pictures don't do it justice. The private beach is beautiful and opens up massively when the tide is out. Remote, beautiful and a step back in time. Greg and Lukas's cottage was fantastic, it was very clean when we arrived. The check in was seamless and the instructions to find the cottage were spot on. We loved the turf fire and lit it every day. We had our dog Joey with us and he loved the nearby beaches which we had to walk without seeing another person. If you are looking for isolation is a beautiful part of the world, I would highly recommend booking this property. It was a super relaxing break in a lovely cottage with modern touches. Really wished we didn't have to come back. All the pieces for the jigsaw are in the box!! Michael

Lovely traditional cottage, well equipped and perfect for our nine nights day, the weather was pretty grim at times but everything felt solid and cosy in this exceptionally beautiful location away from it all. Super situation for accessing the many lovely things to do in County Donegal, plentiful deserted golden beaches and lots of wildlife. Worth considering that many attractions like the folk villager and crafts are not available at this time of the year if that’s what you’re hoping to do in County Donegal. Wow! What a beautifully restored cottage with fabulous views. Cosy, spotlessly clean, amazing shower, great woodburning stove. Take a walk on Dooey Beach. It was a dry but windy day when we went .. and we had the entire beach to ourselves! Miki's Cottage is a perfect spot for rest and relaxation and we wish we could have stayed longer. My partner and I had such an amazing stay at 'Miki's Cottage'. We ended up staying in the midst of storm Brendan, which did not dampen our trip whatsoever - this is purely due to how lovely and cosey the place was and how pretty and quirky the decor was also. We stayed in and made good use of the woodburner which is such a lovely touch. Love the little book of all the great places to visit nearby and we will certainly make good use of this when we come back, which we will! - Cara

Amazing stay for 3 days in the cottage! The place is just so special with the most relaxing view to have your morning tea. It is also very clean and has everything to make you feel comfortable! We went during the winter and the place was perfectly heated. There is a lot of different walks to do around and you can spend days without taking the car if you feel like it. A part of Donegal we were not familiar with, we had the most relaxing week here and the cottage was perfect. Stylish, comfortable (best bed ever), great open plan layout for living / kitchen, fantastic shower, and that view from nearly every window - loved how the light was different every time you looked out. So little passing traffic - all you can hear is the sea, the birds, bees buzzing, the sound of rain on the roof is wonderful. The huge Dooey Strand is only a 15 minute walk and we walked the beach every day, and even in the middle of July sometimes we were the only people on the beach. Dungloe is best for food shopping - LIDL, Aldi and best of all SuperValu (great fresh meat / fish counters). Portnoo Strand is a lovely walk too, and Ardara is a great wee town for a visit. But really we didn’t venture any further than that, and the cottage was so cosy with the stove lit that we cooked and ate there every night. It really is so peaceful, you cannot help but feel restored in body and soul after spending time here. We absolutely loved it. - Jane

A great place , enjoy what you can on foot without chasing all over the county . The information folder has some great tips . Enjoy the peace and tranquility, listen to the waves and the seals . Ardara was fun as was Malin head , Kilcar and surrounding Atlantic Way was stunning . But don’t forget what’s on your door step. We had a wonderful stay at Mickey´s Cottage. The house is clean, very cosy and has everything you need. We liked the look out of the windows and the surrounding is "wow", as well as the beaches. Greg and Lukas' cottage is in a stunning location with lots of beaches, walks and cycles on its doorstep. The house is very comfortable and is really well set up with everything you could need. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was great. The house was really nicely decorated and laid out. There were fresh duck eggs left for us on arrival which were much appreciated. Lukas also dropped in a bucket and spade for our daughter which was very thoughtful. We had a really relaxing few days in the cottage and only wish we were there for longer. We'd definitely like to stay again and would highly reccomend it. - Eloise

The location of the cottage is just amazing. Make sure to check out all the beaches just out of the front door. The cottage itself is super cosy and a perfect hideout for some days to relax. What a marvellous cottage! We all loved it. We had some wild, wet weather and some glorious sunshine. We walked, swam (well, 2 of us did!) ate well, enjoyed the fire, laughed a lot, saw a couple of seals and explored the local area. Marvellous!

We had such a blissful week at the cottage! We had almost everything we needed--a hairdryer would have been nice to have, but I made it through the week without one. The pictures were just as promised, but there's sadly no way you can truly capture both the beauty and serenity of the place. Breathtaking views from a traditional cottage with a cool, contemporary finish. Fantastic spot to take a young family, we forgot our busy lives and lived in the moment, watching the tides turning in a blissful, gently changing landscape. A sea view from every window. Rock pools, picnics, paddling and sandcastles on the private beach, our three year old cried when we had to leave.

Fantastic cottage, brilliant, location on the beach, stunning Donegal scenery, and knockout wildlife. From the cottage and beach during our stay we have seen seals, a sea otter eating a catch, herons fishing, plovers and a we think a pod of porpoises. Fabulous and varied walks around County Donegal. What an amazing place. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous beach house in a beautiful secluded location. The weather was pretty rubbish but there was still loads to do - sea swimming, beach walking, mountains, waterfalls and castles nearby...back home to a turf fire and to watch the sun set over the water. Plenty to keep grown ups and children entertained. Would definitely recommend.

Miki’s cottage is absolutely gorgeous. It’s cosy and fabulously insulated, so even better to hear and not feel the weather, which has been surprisingly good actually. Great location with beautiful views. Even swam off own beach. What’s not to like

We had a great time at 'Teach Mhici' - Miki's Cottage. Beautiful setting and excellent accommodation. The house was toasty warm all weekend. We loved walks on dooey beach then warming up beside the log fire in the evening. This is our 4th stay inside UTT property and they never disappoint. Just returned from a fantastic 4 nights at Teach Mhici. What a little gem of a cottage, everything you need is there and it has been so beautifully done out and to a really high standard. A different view out of every window, and all stunning. We had mixed weather but that only added to the atmosphere and gave us the excuse to use the wood burning stove in the evenings. We will definitely return to Mikis to explore more of this lovely coastline and area. Marion & Glyn

We had a lovely 7 night stay at cottage. On our last day we had a wonderful swim from the nearby beach. The cottage was cosy and well equipped. We mainly cooked in house which was great. Visited Packies Bar and Elliots pub. Both worth a visit. The walk to Dooey beach and the walk along Dooey beach were great. A lovely place to stay and rest up.

Despite my love of Donegal I confess to having had concerns about spending a week in a cottage with no television and the probability of limited or no wifi to act as distractions in the event of poor weather. Now back home after our holiday at Teach Mhici I am delighted to report that my concerns were unfounded. The cottage is exactly as described, comfortable and oozing with irish character. The location was perfect for what we wanted and allowed my husband and I along with our dog to walk from the door to the beach immediately below (at low tide), to walk 3 minutes around the corner to another beach which allowed for reasonable walking opportunities (again at low tide), or to walk 20-30 minutes to the extensive and stunningly beautiful Dooey beach. I found the online booking process to be efficient and straightforward and the ability to contact relevant staff, including the owner, to answer questions following arrival at the property excellent. We had a wonderful week at the cottage despite the challenges of Donegal weather and in fact, as a result of photographs we took and sent to our daughter in Germany, she has now booked a week at Teach Mhici next summer for her and her family. Super cottage, super location and super holiday!

We had a fabulous time at Miki's cottage. The location is spectacular with beautiful sunsets and beaches all within walking distance of the cottage. Easy access to all the sites and a comfortable cottage to return to. Greg was very welcoming and helpful with suggestions of places to visit. Donegal is a magical county to visit. This was everything we hoped for and more. The location is stunning, whatever the weather. We enjoyed many walks on our own beach (which was fairly extensive when the tide was out) plus visiting many of the picturesque bays and coastlines of Donegal. The cottage is immaculate and furnished to a very high standard with lots of space. It fuses the traditional with modern home comforts - great shower. There is absolutely nothing to fault. Thanks for sharing this very special Irish cottage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our break in Donegal. From walking on Dooey beach to exploring the surrounding area - we even spotted a seal from the cottage! Nancy's in Ardara completely met our high expectations with a seafood lunch followed by a browse through the great craft shops in town. The Cottage is really excellent and in such a beautiful place. We were delighted to be the first to stay after UTT's renovations and had the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend here. Cannot emphasise enough how relaxing this place is - if you are looking for a complete getaway it would be hard to beat. Beaches nearby (Dooey in particular) are up there with the best you'll find. Couple of good pubs nearby and a 20 min drive takes you to some really nice wee towns (Ardara amongst them). The cottage itself has been done to a really high standard and has everything you need. Owner was a very friendly and helpful host, when he came down to say hello. We will be back! P.
