about the property

Priced for 2 staying, sleeps 2. An immaculate restoration by our friends Nick and Derek; this romantic Chirk cottage is one of the most romantic we've seen!

  • 'Top 10 Country Estate Holiday Lets' - The Times
  • 'So pristine it's almost a pastoral cliche' - The Financial Times
  • 'Better than any B&B!' - New York Times

"The interior of Capel Pennant is reason enough to stay in this estate chapel, stylishly refurbed by north Wales’s Inspector of Historic Buildings [for Cadw]: the antiques, moody religious paintings, Shaker kitchen and hymn board make it mag-shoot gorgeous. Open the door and you’re in the gardens of one of Wales’s most beautiful upland manor houses, with verdant views down the Ceiriog Valley." The Times

Capel Pennant is an old estate chapel on the Chirk Castle estate within the grounds of a seventeenth-century manor house, in an idyllic setting at the head of a secret valley although only a mile as the crow flies from the National Trust castle.

This corner of North Wales is stuffed with great days out - to nearby Llangollen, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pontcyswllte, Chirk, Ruthin, Moel Famau, etc.

customer reviews for Capel Pennant

Capel Pennant is a cozy and atmospheric gem, nestled in its own secluded valley. Indeed, we didn't leave the house for our first day, just luxuriated in its atmosphere. The heating was so efficient and easy to operate, and the chapel is very close to the loveliest spots to visit - Llangollen (with Plas Newydd), the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Chirk Castle. Heartily recommended - just try and arrive in daylight, and ideally have a rugged car and skilled driver!

Lovely and comfortable accommodation. A little hard to find as it’s up in the hills on single track roads, so don’t rely on your gps stick with owners directions.

Capel Pennant is about the most interesting venue for a holiday I have experienced. It has been restored most professionally by a retired senior Officer of Cadw's Historicl Buildings inspectorate, and it shows !! It is situated in a magnificent setting with fabulous views over the Ceiriog Valley. It's perfect peace is broken only by the singing of birds.

This is a smashing bolthole for two in the lovely Ceiriog valley. A very sensitive renovation of this ancient property that has retained the integrity of the building whilst also making sure that it is snug and warm. Lovely view from the terrace and wonderfully quiet. Some great walking in the area and lots to see and do. Our stay here was restful and very comfortable. Sole grumble, the wood burner is old and doesn't burn as well as modern ones, difficult to light too.

Truly magical! The chapel is gorgeous and the valley in which it sits is so beautiful. An incredibly special place and we would not hesitate to return! The immediate area too is stunning and full of great places to explore. Thank you so much to Nick and Derek for creating such a wonderful holiday getaway!

I had such a wonderful time at Capel Pennant. The accommodation was perfect and very comfortable, the location incredibly tranquil and the hosts extremely friendly and accommodating. 10/10 will definitely return someday, it was exactly what I needed in a break from the city.

We really enjoyed staying at the Chapel. The trek through tortuous lanes more than made up for the glorious views and peace and quiet. All we could hear was the gentle clucking of free range chickens (delicious fresh eggs btw)peppered with the occasional honk from the geese and excited yelps from puppies in the garden below not to mention the wild bird life. Lots to do and see roundabout and plenty of great walks though we possibly need a bit more stamina to cope with the steep hills.

Little oasis literally tucked away in glorious Welsh countryside. The only "noise pollution" was birdsong, an occasional bee, geese honking hello and a rooster rounding up his chicks! A deliciously comfortable bed guaranteed a good night's sleep, a morning cuppa on the doorstep...felt like "easy" on any morning of the week. Wonderful places to visit, great walks and scenery to rival anywhere in the world..and history going back centuries. We even had glorious weather AND a Welsh win at RWC in France. Life does not get much better!

A beautiful place for our honeymoon, memories made that we will treasure forever. Everything was perfect, clean and tidy. Plenty to see and do locally. A lovely experience away from it all with fantastic views that we'll miss.

A wonderful stay at the chapel. Beautiful house in a glorious setting with stunning views. Lovely hosts Nick & Derek and various pets looked after us very well - we were even treated to the sight of a newborn foal! Llangollen and area stunning and beautiful with lots to do if you can tear yourself away from the chapel and its lovely garden and views. Great walking country, steam trains, pretty villages, waterfalls. Dark skies meant plenty of stars at night and we had the sun all week. We loved it and will be returning as soon as possible!

What a gorgeous place, the hosts were charming as was Sky(e) the collie. We were welcomed to a cosy fire already going for us. Beautiful area that we wouldn't have thought to visit, will definitely be back.

We had a lovely few days here; it's a delightfully quiet spot, with open views across the valley and some good (if occasionally quite steep!) walking immediately accessible. The cottage is cosy, full of character and well-appointed - we loved it. It's also an excellent base to explore a corner of Wales (and some bits of England) we don't know well.

What a cracking find. A brilliant property, with splendid isolation and beautiful views. Nick and Derek were wonderful hosts. Will be coming back!

A beautiful space in a stunning location, incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The cottage is so historic and set out cleverly, with interesting paintings and furnishings. Derek and Nick are helpful and welcoming - it is a truly restful place to be. Thank you!

We had a lovely break at Capel Pennant - what an absolute gem of a cottage! Very cosy and comfortable and well appointed. Derek and Nick were great hosts and so welcoming and friendly. Such a nice touch that the woodburner was on when we arrived with ample wood to keep us going. The welcome eggs from their chickens were delicious too! I would highly recommend this property if you want to get away from it all and have some peace and quiet. There are also plenty of things to see and do around the area so you can do as much - or as little - as you like. Can't wait to return! Thank you.

What a perfect little find. If you want some peace and quiet and somewhere to cosy up and read a book, this is it. Plenty of things to do nearby but just being at the Capel is wonderful. Lovely area and views and will definitely be back.

We had a very enjoyable week in this warm, comfortable and quirky cottage. We appreciated the quality and the thought which has gone into furnishing the old Chapel. The surrounding area was fun to explore and the peace and quiet was a tonic. The Plas Pennant hens delivered some beautiful eggs!

The best yet ( and we have been to quite a few!) Nick and Derek are generous and attentive hosts; the situation is magical-nothing but praise.

- Sue T,

We had a wonderful time at Capel Pennant. The owners Derek & Nick were very hospitable and made us feel welcome the moment we arrived. The log burner was already alight and made the home lovely and warm from the moment we entered the converted chapel. This property was perfect for a romantic couples getaway and we highly recommend the area also. Llangollen and the surrounding towns were full of natural beauty and history and we absolutely loved hiking in the hills and mountains of Wales. Thumbs up from us - Sacha & Jmayel El-haj

Another UTT gem! The chapel conversion is wonderful, retaining the character features, but with all 'mod cons'. The location is idyllic, giving the impression of being far from anywhere and yet just 2 miles from Chirk and Llangollen. We enjoyed being surrounded by nature, including house martins, red kites and the farm animals. Nick and Derek were there when we needed them, for lovely fresh eggs or a chat whilst feeding the animals, but respected our privacy at other times. Best to take all provisions if self-catering, as the village shop cum Post Office is a good mile away and all the lanes around are narrow and steep. Also, take a few spare carrots for the horses! This is one to which we shall definitely return.

Capel Pennant was a great place to enjoy some peace and quiet. We had a lovely few days exploring the history and landscape of the Ceiriog Valley. It was just a couple of miles walk to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the breathtaking walk over it - come back via Offa's Dyke path to avoid the steep climb back. Free range eggs provided a treat for our final morning's breakfast.

Beautiful chapel conversion, done to a very high standard. A stunning setting with views down the valley. Peaceful. Good walks from the property.

We had the most delightful stay in this gorgeous cottage, which is a converted chapel. The setting was marvellous with lovely views across the valley and the accommodation was of a really high standard with everything we needed for a short winter break. The owners who live in the neighbouring farm house were very welcoming but not intrusive, and had lit us a lovely fire which made the whole arrival and start of our stay delightful. This was possibly the best self catering accommodation we have stayed in and inspite of both having terrible colds we had a cozy and relaxing break, with fabulous walks and views.
