about the property

Priced for up to 2 staying, sleeps 3. Designed and built in conjunction with Under the Thatch by master craftsman and stylist Dorian Bowen. We were part of the team that built this remarkable place, as seen as a special edition of our show on S4C 'Y Ty Cymreig' ('The Welsh House').

A respite from the modern world, this is a simple, delightful retreat. This modern rustic property is unlike anything you'll find through your average holiday cottage agency. It is exactly what 'Under The Thatch' is all about - simple, rustic, and authentic, private...and very comfortable. Originally built from local materials in an old-fashioned way, in just one night this is a typical croglofft cottage – an open-plan living space with a sleeping loft over. We're delighted to be agents for this peaceful, tranquil place.

customer reviews for Tŷ Unnos

We spent a glorious week in June in this beautiful and very special cottage. Its private, peaceful rural location offers a wonderful retreat from everyday life, yet the stunning Pembrokeshire and Cardigan coastlines – with draws like Tenby, Mwnt and the extraordinary Barafundle Bay – are within easy reach by car. The cottage itself is a stunning restoration with simple, stylish furnishings, soft linen bedding and gentle underfloor heating, making it a calming, comfortable place to relax. Guests also have use of a wonderful five-acre meadow, accessed through the garden gate. Dorian, the owner and restorer, is a truly lovely man who came by to ensure everything was OK and share tips on places to visit (thank you for everything, Dorian). There is no wi-fi at Ty Unnos and life is all the better for it. We enjoyed waking to the joyous song of nesting wrens and morning meadow walks with our (very happy) dog. Bring a blanket for picnics or reading under a tree, and watch for red kites, bats and spectacular starry skies.

This was our second stay here. We didn’t get to meet Dorian on the first but we did this time. He is a really friendly person, and full of places to go and things to do in the area. This place is perfect to unwind and relax. A bottle of wine with the logburner is simply perfect. If you step just outside the front door at night you can see some star constellations - an amazing sight. One other thing is that we took a small portable tv with us, for evening viewing and were able to pick up all channels. - Dinesh

Tŷ Unnos is a beautiful still place. We loved being there: some wonderful cycling, sea walking, bird and bat and moon watching, and just sitting. Thank you. Diolch yn fawr - lle bach hyfryd iawn. Eleri

Lovely relaxing stay. Weather ideal. Cottage located down 1/4 mile track. Best drive along slowly, which is fine. Private location but lots to see within 30 mins drive. Large supermarkets in Carmarthen plus co-op in St Clears. Cottage as in pics - stylishly rustic. Very nice. Bed comfy. Kitchen has all you need. Bathroom quirky! Would love to be lucky enough to return

Beautiful property and location. Such a relaxing place.

Many thanks for a beautiful cosy cottage holiday. We enjoyed the cliff climbs along the New Quay coastal path. Kayaking, cairn climbing and cliff jumping at White sands Bay and the Blue Lagoon was amazing. The cottage was a perfect hideaway for us. My daughters loved sleeping in the crog loft and underneath the stairs. The bathroom spa was a luxury. We enjoyed the daffodil assault course and the maize crop circle. Beautiful sunsets and the orange easter moon. Thank you, Tina, Laylah & Ahna XXX

Our stay at the cottage was wonderful. The cottage had everything we needed and was perfectly situated for visits to both the Pembrokeshire coast and the Brecon Beacons. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

- Robyn J,

Really enjoyed our stay here; a peaceful rural location but not too far away from the coast and lovely little towns like Llandeilo and Narberth. A special place to relax and unwind.

Wonderful three nights stay at Ty Unnos. Beautifully curated space that had everything we needed for a completely relaxing getaway. Just perfect. Y lle perffaith ar gyfer gwyliau hamddenol. Tom a Myfanwy

This was a wonderful spot: a country retreat; stylish, simple, tasteful, and utterly relaxing. A great base to see everything from as well: with good food within a short drive, both coasts within reach, and amazing inland walks all around. Would go there again. And again. And again. To re-boot.

Stunningly beautiful, simplistic and stylish home. The old and modern in perfect harmony. The stillness of the landscape - a rare contemplative space. . Take some books, a pen and a journal for your thoughts. Great for couples, probably not the average child, no TV wifi or reception. Perfect !

Loved the cottage, a great mix of traditional and contemporary. Warm and comfortable in a great setting.

We had such a lovely time at Tŷ Unnos - cosy, beautifully furnished and decorated, and the bed was very comfy! We loved sitting by the wood fire in the evening and taking bubble baths in the deep bathtub! The area was so quiet and peaceful. We mostly had everything we needed, but a bottle opener would be useful! Unfortunately the visitors book seemed to have gone astray, but we found the list of things to do and places to eat and drink in the information book very welcoming. We cannot wait to stay again.

We had a lovely relaxing visit to the cottage, which is simply gorgeous. Very easy to chill out and relax in such peaceful accommodation.

What a fabulous place to stay. A lovely secluded location; we enjoyed the peace and quiet. We loved the interior of the cottage - simple but with some lovely design features. We took the opportunity to explore the north Pembrokeshire coast which we know less well than the south. Mwnt is stunning.

What a magical place to stay, a wonderful recreation of an original Ty Unnos. Great attention to detail in the interior, loved the use of curved wood and literally sleeping under the thatch!

- Lesley R,

We had such a lovely stay. Secluded location and very peaceful. Great attractions near like Dylan Thomas' boathouse and the botanical gardens. A fairly close drive to the seaside resorts of Tenby. We would definitely stay here again!

Ty Unnos was just perfect for a short break away from it all.

- Sheila N,

A very interesting, cosy and peaceful place to stay. Fantastic to get away from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century and pay a visit to the early 19th. Really interesting to flick through the photos and story behind the building of this fascinating place - hard to believe that it is only ten years old rather than 200! A great experience.

- Tom I,

Absolutely perfect and Dorian is the most generous and delightful host.

- Helen garlick ,

I had seen photos of the cottage, but nothing prepared me for the tranquility and peace it exuded. The cottage had everything we needed, from the fluffy white towels to the heated towel rail and underfloor heating was an absolute bonus.Feather and down pillows and duvets were also a surprise. I brought my own along, but I didn't need them! Dorian was a very friendly helpful host and gave us plenty of information about the area and where to visit. I highly recommend this cottage. It's rustic but with modern amenities, it's the perfect retreat in the countryside, quiet, rural but near enough to visit towns and villages.

- Sharon D,

Wonderful nest to curl up in and rest. Free from any outside intrusion with no phone or wifi thankfully just the sneaked appearance of a friendly cat. Will return .

A really exceptional cottage. Cosy, warm and authentic. Beautifully furnished. A real taste of Wales!

- Laura T,

The cottage is fantastic- so peaceful and relaxing. Dorian was very welcoming especially carrying some extra logs. Perfect location to visit the beaches at Poppit and Pendine- we will definitely be back.

- Rachel james-patch ,

I would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to get away from it all. It is in a beautiful, hidden, location down a bumpy track. Dorian kindly provided a 'starter pack' of Welsh cakes and eggs and told us something of the history of the site. We had everything we needed for a comfortable and cosy stay, with interesting woodland walks close by.

What an amazing place! A beautiful, healing, calming space. The cottage folds you in, taking you back in time, to a more simple way of life. The stress just seeps away as you watch the changing light play on the walls, from sunrise to sunset. The surrounding countryside offers many hidden gems and is a place of both awesome vistas and cosy nooks and crannies. Sitting in front of the flickering fire, with Mrs Jones the cat and a glass of something lovely - who could ask for more?

- Claire B,

Ty Unnos is quite simply a slice of Carmarthenshire heaven! We arrived in the mist and were instantly spellbound by its stillness, simplicity and calm allure. A step back in time that remarkably avoids pastiche and instead evocatively honours an uncomplicated past. To fall asleep listening to the rain on the thatch and then to awake to early morning sunshine was perfection in itself and although we explored the surrounding area during our stay, the cottage seduced us to linger and just experience its calm, uncluttered serenity. We simply sat, we absorbed its ambience, we listened to nature, we re-read some favourite books and we left utterly refreshed. Feel privileged to discovered and stayed at such a perfect retreat. Dorian, at Ty Unnos you really have created a wonderful experience - we can hardly wait to return there or to one of your other cottages. Llongyfarchiadau!

An absolutely perfect environment for "total decompression"- no tv,internet or any distractions from relaxation and peace. A beautiful building built by Mr Bower. Thank You

- Emma L,

Ty Unnos is a charming property that provided us with the chance to experience a little traditional style living. We appreciated the peace, seclusion and opportunity to reflect. Dorian is a good host who took care to ensure we had arrived safely on the first evening and who checked we had all we needed. The house has everything needed for a pleasant break and helped us to imagine what life might have been like in a pre-digital time. The cottage did get chilly and so we appreciated being able to light a fire. The local cat, Mrs Jones, was an added bonus each evening and we looked forward to her visit! All in all a lovely weekend away.

- Claire N,
2016

A wonderful, peaceful break. We enjoyed the cottage and exploring the surrounding coastal areas. Dorian was very welcoming and we enjoyed Mrs Jones' frequent visits. A top tip is to bring some slippers as the floor is beautiful but quite cold! Thank you for such a lovely week.

- Jacqueline S,

Our first acquiantance with UTT and Wales. Both breathtaking with a laid back atmosphere to match the beautiful surroundings and tranquility. Perfect for a short retreat and Mrs. Jones to grant us her company she complemented our nice long evenings. Did not want to leave this very inspiring place that timewarpes you to the basic comforts of rural daily life. Refreshing! Thank you Dorian for the warm welcome including Welsh cakes also a first for us. Mark and Mara

We had a wonderful, relaxing long weekend in Ty Unnos. The cottage was everything we'd hoped - so welcoming and full of atmosphere - so much so we didn't want to leave. We also enjoyed our evening visits from Mrs Jones - a real character!

- Heather P,

Ty Unnos was even better than expected. The cottage and setting are BEAUTIFUL, and Mrs Jones the cat came to visit us every day. Would recommend trips to Barafundle beach, St Davids, Whitesands Bay, Narberth. Already planning a trip back - would definitely recommend!

We had a lovely time in the beautiful Ty Unnos. It's been so brilliantly restored combining authenticity with modern comforts.. the underfloor heating was a dream, along with fabulous bathroom. Two lovely sunny spring days, walking, relaxing and celebrating our friend's birthday - staying in Bryn Eglur next door!

- Jackie L,

It was such a lovely week in Ty Unnos. Peace, beauty, simplicity, I loved everything about it and can't wait to return.

- Ruth T,
2016

Absolutely brilliant ! The cottage is exactly as described and we had a wonderful time. If you didn't know it, you would think this had indeed been built in the 1800s but Dorian has incorporated just enough modern features to make life comfortable including a large, warm bathroom and underfloor heating. As we have an open fire at home, we took three bags of logs with us and my husband really enjoyed cooking all our meals on the woodburning stove. It is pretty and peaceful and made a lovely Valentine's retreat for us. I would recommend it highly.

- Vivienne C,

Wonderful stay. The cottage is beautiful and so peaceful. The underfloor heating is marvellous and the woodburner works really well. Some softer lighting would be great - a lamp or two in the main space.

An amazing property and friendly, helpful owner. It was a joy to wake up and contemplate the roof ! This stay prompted a visit to St. Fagans which showed us how true Dorien's reproduction was.

- Janice C,

Ty Unnos is a project beautifully undertaken. We admired the skill and dedication displayed in every detail in this authentic reconstruction. My wife, whose family come from Narberth, recognised many of the pieces of furniture from her childhood. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and experience of a simpler life.

- Richard N,
2015

The cottage was beautiful. Haven't seen another like it. The feeling of it was very cosy, thanks to the thick walls and thatched roof but it didn't feel cramped due to the high ceiling and spacious bathroom. Dorian was very helpful and the small details of the decor made the cottage feel like a home, as did Mrs Jones the cat who came to say hello most days.

- Jed H,
2015

This cottage is rural and rustic and so quaint. Such a peaceful place the only sounds being the birds. We loved it and the owner was kind and friendly. The dogs loved it and we enjoyed everything about our stay.

- Gillian B,

The cottage when we found it as it was really secluded! Wow amazing place if your looking for total peace! We had a wonderful time and made a new friend- Mrs Jones- Dorians cat! So cute! We would definitely come back x

- Pamjit P,
2015

All brilliant. 5 year old daughter loved the box bed, pictures, interesting ornaments etc, fields to run around in and, most of all, the cat. Great experience to be able to stay in such a unique property and in a fab location too :-) P.S.- Dorian was very helpful with our last minute booking and even more so when we locked ourselves out. Thanks very much!

- Katie F,

The cottage was amazing and I felt very privileged to be able to stay in such a beautiful place with the museum piece furnishings. It was Mrs Jones the cat that was the final and very fitting addition to the whole picture; loved a cwtch and happy to curl up on the settle in front of the fire. No TV or Internet, just R4 or the sound of nature outside for company which was such a great stress reliever. I do some work for the National Trust and have dressed a room so I know how important it is to get it right and to see like the occupants have just left the room for a moment - to be atmospheric and feel in that time. Thank you Dorian. Stacey

'Oh my! We have had an absolutely wonderful stay at Ty Unnos. This is such especial place and really unique experience for our family. The cottage is superb and we loved all the gorgeous antiques that furnish it . Our two year old son absolutely loved sleeping in the box bed and being able to cuddle 'Mrs Jones’ (the cat) He’s had a ball !! We feel that we have experienced something pretty spectacular and have some lovely memories to take away. We’ll definitely be back.' Jeff, Lara & Fynn, from the Gower
