Most likely rebuilt in the seventeenth century on a medieval burgage plot running up to the castle, this beautiful holiday home had a formal rendering of its oak frame in Georgian or Victorian days, and a recent rejuvenation inside to create what we think is simply the best self-catering option in the Hay-on-Wye area. The location is perfect, the interior is gorgeous, and the local owner has dressed the place beautifully with a wonderful art collection and furnishings. Comfortable, tasteful, curated. Beyond being the best accommodation for the world-famous Hay Festival, here you'll find that Hay provides an enjoyable stay at any time of the year, whether you like good books, good food, good antiques or hiking. Sleeping four in two bedrooms, and two good bathrooms, plus sofabeds in two further rooms for up to four others, it'd be a great place for friends to come together, do some canoeing down on the river, potter about the shops, and dine out, withour anyone even having to use the (well-appointed) kitchen.

A terrific little house, perfectly placed and equipped for a delightful break in Hay. Nowhere in Hay seems to be more than a few minutes walk away, so the restricted parking immediately outside is not a problem as there are free and paid car parks easily reached, and we had no problems dropping off and collecting luggage. If you don't want to use the well-equipped kitchen to cook dinner, you are never more than a few hundred yards away from a decent eatery. And you can buy lavender shortbread from the shop next door, which is perhaps recommendation enough by itself. The clock tower bells? Well, we got so used to them so quickly that now I am home again and wake up in the night, I am perplexed that they are not there to let me know what time it is. The owner is quick to respond to any queries and eager that guests should get the best experience from the house. So, all good really. Also, it turns out that there are one or two bookshops in Hay. Who knew? :-)

We have had a lovely stay in Hay. The accommodation was clean and attractive. The bedrooms were very comfortable and bathrooms were stylish and comfortable. The kitchen was super. . My only bug bear is the furniture in the sitting.room. It was all quite uncomfortable. A squishy sofa would be so much more relaxing. It was a lovely stay and I would recommend.

We had a great new year stay in Hay-on-Wye. The cottage is really comfortable and well-equipped with plenty of interesting spaces. It is central to the lovely town, castle and walks which meant we didn’t use our car at all. We would definitely recommend it.

A most beautiful place to stay…. Comfortable, tasteful and stylish - we loved our week at Y Gelli. Especially delightful was the master bedroom with super king bed and en-suite.Being in the centre of Hay with all the independent businesses ( including Farmers next door !) is so convenient for stocking up with reading matter, ingredients for dinner in and of course dinners out!

This house didn’t disappoint at all. It’s right in the midst of Hay on Wye and perfectly placed for walks, bookshop browsing and food. It stood out by miles when we were looking for a place to stay and whilst it was generous for two plus dog, we felt at home. The small garden is very well enclosed for our elderly rescue dog. We really will miss the people watching (and them watching us, at times we felt famous!) Thank you!

Lovely relaxing, cosy stay in this spacious, well situated cottage. Well equipped for cooking (great ingredients from nearby Hay Deli) very comfortable to come back to after the beautiful local mountain walks. Handy spot to dip into the eclectic delights of Hay. Stylish and interesting mix of furnishings and art, the only thing we would change is having a comfier sofa. Would definitely recommend this fab house though.

The cottage was absolutely gorgeous, everything high spec and classy. The bed was like sleeping on a big marshmallow Devine! We had the best nights sleep. We loved having the wood burner on at night and the heating was very efficient and easy to use. It was like the Tardis, looked tiny from the outside but plenty of space inside. We loved the sound of the old town clock next door,, such a lovely sound. Being central to all the towns amenities was brilliant, a beautiful little town with fabulous independent shops and everyone was so friendly.The cafe over the road had the most delicious food, we were in there often.
