about the property

Priced for up to 2 staying, sleeps 8. We're very pleased to be the only cottage agency to represent Tŷ Trefaldwyn (The Old Post Office) in gorgeous Montgomery - beautifully restored by friend Gerry.

'As short-break destinations go, the pint-sized Powys town of Montgomery has it all; tempting shops, delicious places to eat, a ruined castle to explore and some of the scenic streets in Wales - and now visitors can stay at Ty Trefaldwyn!' BBC Homes & Antiques

A handsome, Listed Old Post Office with four bedrooms on one of the most idyllic town in Wales.

A few years ago we had the privilege of writing and co-presenting a number of TV series on the architectural history of Welsh towns, and would spend 30+ weeks of the year looking for, and filming, the best preserved and most beautiful urban scenes in the country. Trefaldwyn (Montgomery) was our favourite of all the places we filmed. It's the kind of place you visit once and promise to retire to, or move to, or to revisit again and again as it has such a perfect, gentle charm, that you can't believe you'd never heard of it, or that the place isn't thronging with tourists (it isn't).

Trefaldwyn is a tiny country town in the most glorious area, easily accessible to many wonderful days out - it's an area so unspoilt that it feels like there is no ugliness here at all. The people that live here care about their town, its cafes, craft and antique shops, and that things look good, are well conserved, and well cared for - the values that make Under the Thatch.

This is a beautiful conversion of an eighteenth-century commercial premises on the square, facing the town hall. The shop fenestration has been preserved, but with a clever and artistic glass etching to create privacy whilst maintaining a view out over the town. Like everything here, it has been well done.

Take steps from the door to good cafes and cake shops, to antiques and good pubs, or to the castle just above. Days out will take you to the best of the Welsh borders as you take the country lanes between Shropshire and Montgomeryshire.

What a lovely refurbished Old Post Office in the middle of Montgomery. Perfect location for 8 university friends catching up with each other before Christmas. We’d thoroughly recommend both The Old Post Office and Under The Thatch. One member of the party was a returning visitor - she knew we’d all love it and she was correct! Diolch yn fawr iawn.

We absolutely loved the house. It is finished to an extremely high standard with everything you need. It has the most well equipped kitchen and we were impressed by the welcome hamper with some lovely local produce. Montgomery is a hidden gem with beautiful Georgian architecture and has everything you need - a small supermarket, cafe, pub, gift shops and hotel. The local people were very friendly and helpful, especially the staff at the amazing Bunners. Highly recommend staying in this gorgeous house and town.

We had a fantastic 4 nights here , the house is finished to a very high standard and has a well equipped kitchen. There’s plenty of parking spaces outside and being right on the market square you’re literally meters from a great Spar shop , deli, fish and chips, the best iron mongers / hardware store I have ever been in that sells everything! book shop and local craft shop. The spar also has a great selection of local beers and good wine selection. There are also cafes , pubs and restaurants but we didn’t have time to try these.

A well thought out layout. The history of the building was well preserved alongside modern comforts. The waste removal needs to be thought through, when we stayed it looked like there was a months paper and bottle rubbish in the back corridor. This was well separated from the accommodation and did not affect our enjoyment of our stay. Overall a good experience in good accommodation in a very pleasant town.

Highly reccomend as a base to explore town and surrounding areas. We loved the layout of the house, especially the open plan groundfloor and the little sitting area in main bedroom was appreciated. Powis Castle and Welshpool railway were both well worth a visit and in Montgomery I lived St Nicholas Church. Lots of free parking, a Spar opposite and good coffee a few doors down at Castle Kitchen made it a fab location.

It was a perfect house and location for our family to get together and totaly relax with a few short walks and cycle rides in the area. Diolch yn fawr iawn xx
